I’m a Professional Engine Builder — They Ruined My OM642, Lied About Mercedes Specs, and Held My Parts Hostage

Complaint:  I am a professional mechanic with a degree in mechanical engineering, trained specifically in internal combustion engine design. I’ve rebuilt hundreds of engines over the years with my own hands. That’s why I immediately recognized that this machine shop is both dangerously incompetent and deeply dishonest.

I brought them a Mercedes OM642 engine block (standard bore 83.00 mm) and a brand-new set of NPR oversize pistons marked 83.50 mm on the factory box. I gave verbal instructions, through a fluent English-speaking friend, to bore the block according to the pistons’ actual measurements — with a proper diesel clearance of 0.06–0.07 mm.

But instead of working from actual piston dimensions, they started converting everything into inches and showed a clear lack of proper metric equipment. Their understanding of tolerances was so misguided that they presented me with a printed document, which they claimed was provided by a Mercedes-Benz dealer, stating that the correct clearance should be 0.128 to 0.140 mm.

They were extremely insistent:

They kept pointing their fingers at the paper,

Highlighted the clearance numbers in yellow marker,

Drew arrows and marks all over the page,

And told me with full confidence that "this is the correct data — straight from Mercedes — everything you read online is fake."

I still have that exact paper in my possession — complete with their company information printed on it and their markings, which I kept as evidence of their false claims.

Anyone with even basic diesel engine experience knows that 0.128–0.140 mm clearance is not acceptable for a 3.0L V6 Mercedes OM642. These values might apply to giant 15-liter commercial engines like Detroit Diesels — but not to a high-efficiency turbocharged light-duty diesel. Their numbers are wildly wrong, and their confidence only made it worse.

Once I pointed out their mistake and said they had destroyed the block, I told them they could keep the block — but I wanted my other valuable components back, including:

My brand-new NPR pistons

The main bearing cap bolts

The lower crankcase girdles

They refused to return anything unless I paid for the work they botched. That’s extortion, plain and simple — using my own property as leverage after destroying my engine.

I have photos, video documentation, piston box labels, and the fraudulent clearance document with their markings and highlights.

Do not trust this shop under any circumstances — especially with metric, diesel, or precision engines. They lack the tools, knowledge, and ethics to do the job right — and then blame you when they fail.

Western Engine Supply got a Mercedes v6 turbo diesel block in from Boqdan Voyt on 5/7/2025 to go .5mm oversize which is 83.5mm not 83mm as Evgeni states. When measuring the piston to 83.5mm if we finished the block at that spec we would only have .013mm clearance which is .00005” (too tight). Western looked the specs up on Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association web site who gets their information from Alldata who gets their information from the manufacturer and the clearance spec was .005-.0055”(.12mm) which seemed loose for a 83.5mm bore but the engine is a turbo diesel which requires more clearances. Western Engine called Boqdan and explained the piston size to final bore size and the specs that AERA showed and asked if he had a different clearance spec per the piston mfg, Boqdan was going to investigate the spec and get back to Western. Western had to call Boqdan 2 more times again to follow up on a clearance spec and he informed Western that he didn’t have a clearance spec and for Western to finish the cylinders per AERA specs and if the ring end gap was too big he would get a different set of rings to tighten up ring end gap. Boqdan had many opportunities to provide any spec that he wanted clearances set to. Western finished the block and called Boqdan for 2 ½ week to come and pickup the block. Finally 1 month after the block was brought into Western on 6/10/2025 Evgeni came to pick up the block and claimed that Boqdan no longer works at the business and that he (Evgeni) wanted .7mm piston to cylinder wall clearance. Western explained the conversations with Boqdan and the specs that were agreed upon. Boqdan Voyt was the name on the repair order and his phone number was the contact phone number. Western Engine supply questioned the piston size with Boqdan initially. Western made several calls to Boqdan to see if the piston mfg had a different spec but provided nothing and told to have Western finish the block at the AERA spec. Evgeni claims to have built 1 of these engines previously and did not like the clearances that the block has. If Evgeni wanted a specific piston clearance he had many opportunities to tell Boqdan or Western and it would have been finished to his specification. If Evgeni is mad at someone it should be Boqdan for not doing his job and not at Western Engine Supply.
