I worked for this company for about a year and a half. My bosses were Doug Martin and Joel Iverson, for the time I worked there all of the employees were abused and mistreated. I was personally made to work at one time 7 hours without food or drink or without so much as of a break. We were made to illegally pick up abestos at locations without any gloves or masks provided, and with the abestos crumbling on top of our clothes and us breathing it in. On top of that the General Manager Joel Iverson would dump the abestos at the back of his house into the shrewsbury river which I personally declined to do when he asked me for help, he even went as far as saying that a few tiles crumbled on top of me would not "hurt".

Doug Martin is a thief and a crook, he constantly overcharges customers, arriving at thier homes with trucks half full or with only 1/4 of the truck open. He doesn't charge by volume like the company states he does, he actually will over charge by a couple of a hundred dollars if he sees the person has the money (big home, nice car, etc).

Manager Grady Hunt and Joel Iverson have tried to be verbally abusive to the guys I work with and to me personally, but I was the only one in the company with a voice who stood up to them, for this, my hours were cut, and I was eventually terminated. Doug personally makes sure that all the guys paychecks are under $500 every two weeks!!! He cuts hours as needed and hires part timers for this. $500 for the kind of work we do is nothing, I was made to carry 1,200 pound hot tubs and 1,500 pound pianos "because he said I workout, i can handle it". All the guys have injured themselves, and I know have nerve damage on my left hand from two severe cuts I acquired while working with this DISHONEST and UNFAIR company, he hires illegal laborers as well, to threaten us when we complain about his unfair treatment, I am currently undertaking a lawsuit upon this comapny and hope everyone will NEVER work for them when they read how they trully are.

You should be shut down. If the DOT was contacted to inspect your trucks you would be heavily fined. As a commercial truck you require a back up alarm. There is one truck that has one..... The truck tires are worn down to the wire. These trucks carry 1000's of pounds. How can you safetly say these tires are safe for your employees to drive, without risk of tire blow out? The windsheilds have cracks that constantly contiune to spread and arent replaced unless one does. The inspection stickers inside the cab say EXP 2006, this is the federal annual inspection sticker, ANNUAL meaning, YEARLY REQUIREMENT TO BE INSPECTED! The reason why an employee such as myself will stay with a company that asks them to cheat is because you guys grease our palms with a little "bonus $$$". The Got Junk franchise in itself is a very wonderful franchise however, the behind the scenes work, and abuse from the Jersey West franchise "management" never meets the NJ OSHA, DOT, NJ DEP, NJ WORKFORCE AND LABOR, or anyone else's personal safety and satisfaction.

PLEASE CALL ANY CURRENT OR PAST EMPLOYEE

POSTED: Monday, May 27, 2013

1-800-GOT-JUNK? is a company located in 3 countries; and we  have tremendous penetration throughout North America.

Everything we do is above board and we would be happy to provide you contact information for any current employee.

An important step when choosing any business is doing proper due diligence and not relying on the words and comments of a few. There are many reasons why individuals could be writing eroneous reports and there are many times these reports have merit. It is up to the consumer to do a thorough job researching both sides of any statement.

As a company, Safety is our #1 goal, it is written on our whiteboard, all our employees are trained with a priority on safety and we talk about safety regularly. WE DO NOT TAKE HAZZARDOUS MATERIALS LIKE ASBESTOS, anyone who makes that claim is flat out LYING.

Another lie is that we do not inspect our trucks or repair them, we take the safety of our employees very seriously. Please call the New Jersey Dept. of Motor Vehicles, we have never been a day late with an inspection and please call Isuzu(all our trucks) we maintain these trucks and make them safe.

As stated, if our team is as good as stated and they are, would they stay at a company that asks them to cheat?

The majority of our employees are here over a year and some 2-3 years.

With safety being our number one goal, our number 2 goal is wowing the customers, not cheating the customers.

We are far from perfect, but we always try and do the right things in every situation and gauging customers is not what we do.

Doug Martin is a Liar

AUTHOR: anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 01, 2012

The New Jersey West franchise owner Doug Martin does not care about the safety or well being of his workers. He is a crooked owner and WILL rip off his employees when regards to money and tracked number of hours, as well as the so called "profit sharing", and "metal money". All of the trucks are unsafe for driving all of the ANNUAL INSPECTION stickers on the truck have not been updated since 2006. The tires on all the trucks are of varying tread pattern, weight specs, and tread wear. Some tires are even bald exposing the inner metal wires. The interior of the trucks are supposed to be equipped with proper gloves and masks. Good luck finding a decent pair of work gloves without holes, and as far as a mask.....ha! Going into homes where there are obvious health hazards with breathing in mold, dust, dirt, and whatever else the air of these hoarder houses contain is always fun. Customers constantly ask why we are not wearing masks or proper safety equipment, all we can say is that's not in management's budget. And yes we are trained from the beginning to over quote jobs to always hit that quota. If a customer seems to have money then yes not only are the employees encouraged to jump the price up a bit and see if they bite, but I have also seen Doug Martin rip people off who don't know any better. I understand it is his business but if there are any dangers involved in the job that according to OSHA standards we are unable to do with out safety training, money talks. For example a house full of black mold, animal feces, asbestos and any other hazardous materials Doug will often pay off his employees to just keep hush hush and do the job. There is not such thing as a lunch break. You are often scolded or told you can not get lunch now after 8 hours of work. A typical summer work day is 11-12hrs. Running from job to job basement to basement and attic to attic without a chance to get a drink of water is physically dangerous. The company has its pros though you meet a great group of guys on the job, all the employees are the best people i have ever worked with. Basically I am done with my rant all I have to say is simply have some common sense if you look where Doug Martin posts a response on this page then you look at the post of the current employee that says best company i have ever worked for JUST LOOK AT THE DATES THEY ARE THE SAME DAY. LOOK AT THE WRITING STYLE. THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT WAS DOUG MARTIN NOT AN ACTUAL EMPLOYEE

The truth is at the beginning

AUTHOR: Nreality - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 28, 2009

As a former employye of this company for 3 yrs I have first hand knowledge that the orginal post is correct. There are conditions and bosses/supervisors that put the dollar well before safety. I have been on appointments where there is black mold, asbestos, human/animal waste and was supposed to do the pick up. I am all for earning my check put luckily smart and strong enough to say no. It is also true from being the one doing estimates that it is strongly encouraged to chare businesses and well off customers higher rates simply by not packing the truck as well or even keeping doors shut so no one can see the true volume of the truck. It is also no rare occurance to have a missed meal on long days but that is rare because most times all u have to do is ask to stop at a gas station for water and some food. All in all it was a fun experience but as with any business money is the bottom line. It is also metionable about the pre written rebuttals from the corporate offfice that the francisers use as a rebuttal its really just a way to advertise for free and to fill in the blank to respond to bad press.

THE BEST COMPANY I HAVE EVER WORKED FOR!!!!!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Just An Employee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 13, 2007

I am currently employeed with 1-800-GOT-JUNK in NJ. Hands down this is the best company I have ever worked for. I enjoy it because its not the same 9-5 like most jobs. Everytime we go to a cliets house the experience is different. We go from upscale areas such as Colts Neck and Rumson to downscale area as Trenton and Willingboro. The response we get from or customers is awesome. Everyone is so happy to have their "clutter" removed. We do much more then just take peoples trash away. We give people back there space. Whether we are clearing out a garage so that the customer can once again park their car inside or giving them back their basement that was over run with items once deemed necessity.
I enjoy the sincere thank yous we always get from them. With this company hard work pays off. The truth is that when you dont do what your told, in any job, your not going to get preferance over those that preform to the expectations of management. To say that one was "made to" lift 1200lb item is poposterous in my personal opinion. I consider myself to be strong; however, to think I could lift 600lbs by myself is crazy. We have been taught from day one that we only take what two people can reasonably lift. I have personaly been on several jobs where we had to tell the customer we could not do the job due to the weight of the item. I have turned down safes, grand pianos, and old coal stoves in the basement.
I have also never been threatened at this job. Im my opinion the top management( aka Doug Martin and Joel Iverson) go out of their way to help us. I can remember numerous times when they have. For example one guy got food poison and Doug went to the hospital to visit him. One day a guy didn't show up for work, we tryed to get a hold of him with no response. Doug went as far as to contact this individuals grandmother to go check on him to make sure he was okay. Doug has let one guy borrow money to fix his truck and also let us borrow money for gas if we were in a pince.
Also, we have all been taught what we are allowed to take and what we are not allowed to. Asbestos has always been a big "no-no"! I can remember a job we had in Allentown, NJ were we had to turn down a large job because there were asbestos tiles in the pile we were supossed to take. We have all see pictures of what it looks like and and different forms it can come in such as shingle tiles, pipe insulation and ceiling tiles. We have always been taught that "when in doubt" don't take it.
I would also like to point out that we have always charged based on volume. A refrigerator is the same price whether we are in Rumson or Burlington City! The financial status of our client doesn't affect how we quote. Furthermore, I would hope that anyone that has read the above complaint about my employeer will take it with a grain of salt. Of course everyone is more then welcome to have their own opinion, I just feel that my employeer was unfairly treated in what I have read above. Again I would like to reiterate that this has been my favorite job. Thank you for taking the time to read how I feel about this issue and would implore anyone questioning this top notch company to try it out for yourself. Schedule an appointment with us and you will see first hand our excellent customer service and honest business practices!

#4 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Disgruntled employee with no basis in any of his statements

POSTED: Tuesday, November 13, 2007

The New Jersey East 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Franchise is responding to the verbal attack by a terminated employee.

1-800-GOT-JUNK?, North America's largest junk removal company, believes integrity and professionalism to be foremost among its core values. Our employees represent these values every day as they perform our services for our customers. What you have read on this website, are the ramblings of a disgruntled employee whom we had to let go. His remarks are inaccurate, and have no basis in truth at all.
The complainant claims that we overcharge our customers based on their affluence, this is a complete lie. We treat every potential customer the same way we quote based on the volume that is taken up in the truck not because someone drives a Mercedes. Our company proudly embraces four basic tenants of business: Up-front pricing, friendly uniformed drivers, clean shiny trucks and on-time service. When a customer contacts our call center, a representative explains that we price by volume and describes our pricing levels. When our service team comes on-site to the customer location, we always start by giving the customer a free estimate of the volume of the truck that will be needed to complete the removal. Our price sheet is standard and is shown to the customer by the team. It is also available by calling the Client Services Center or by visiting our web-site.

Our customers routinely rate our services and our company with the highest ratings. Toward that end, we can keep only those employees who themselves represent the highest ethical, quality and business standards that our customers expect and deserve. We are proud of the current team of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? employees! More than 15 % of our business is repeat business, while another 10% of our business is through referrals. This is a great testament to the value we provide our customers and to the high quality business practices by which we live.

It was also stated that we make our employees handle hazardous materials like asbestos; nothing could be further from the truth. We train our employee's starting day 1 that we do not take hazardous materials, our call center and web site also make the same statements. We will and have walked away from jobs when asbestos was found, it is simply not acceptable and there are no exceptions.

It was stated that we make our employees carry 1500 pound objects, again another non-truth. We state on our website in our call center and on site with the truck team that we will remove any item that two men can reasonably move. Something that weighs 1500lbs. is not reasonable and we would not take it in its current state. We would consider cutting it up into smaller safer pieces and then removing it, this is how we remove 95% of our hot-tubs. Safety is our #1 rule, we preach and practice this every day and like hazardous materials we walk away from jobs where the items are too heavy and may cause physical injury.

As far as the statements of hiring illegals so that I can curtail my guys/gals hours again this goes against the grain of what we believe in and we do not hire illegals and we do not limit hours.

Visit us at www.1800gotjunk.com to book online, or simply call our toll free number 1-800-GOT-JUNK? (1-800-468-5865) to speak to one of our agents. You will be impressed with our friendly, uniformed, and trustworthy drivers; our clean shiny trucks; our on-time service; and our up-front rates. I guarantee you will be pleased with the services we provide and the value of those services in relation to their price.

Ivan was a former employee whom we had to terminate for significant and inexcusable infractions of our employee standards of performance and accountability.
