I should have checked this web site first, but I didn't do my homework, and it cost me.
A Best Choice Movers... they give you a nice low per hour price quote on the phone, and then hit you up with a bunch of extras.
If they break something, you can call and ask for a claim form to get your measly 60 cents a pound of insurance. They'll TELL you its on the way, but you'll NEVER get it. So, if they damage any of your stuff, you're out of luck.
The free boxes you are supposed to get need to be picked up by YOU at their place of business, or AGAIN, you're out of luck.
So, basically a move that, according to Brandon (the rep I spoke with), would have cost under $1000, ended up costing around $3000!
A Best Choice movers will appear on the following links, if you search for moving companies trying to get the best price:
http://www.vanlines.com/moving_companies/company_info/a_best_choice_movers_ld.html
http://www.123movers.com/moving_service.asp?a_best_choice_movers_corp
There may be other sites. These were the first two I got when I searched.
TIPS in General with moving companies:
- EVERYTHING that CAN be boxed SHOULD be boxed.... by YOU - beforehand. And DON'T use bags.... they won't take bags, and wardrobes or other large boxes will cost you!
- if they offer any free boxes, ask up front how you actually RECEIVE them- do you need to pick them up yourself?
- get EVERYTHING in writing ahead of time. Anything they tell you verbally is WORTHLESS, and if there's a dispute later on, they'll just say you're lying.
- my friend said you should get a "not to exceed clause" in the contract, which basically says that no matter what, you won't be charged over the amount specified. I can't see movers agreeing to this unless they are reputable, though.
I think overall, you'd be better off going with a moving company that gives you a firm price FOR THE WHOLE JOB ahead of time. No gotchas that way. I fell for the "low hourly rate" gimmick, and I probably payed twice as much as I should have, but I didn't know any better.
