My daughter is a single young mother with 2 small children. Recently she lost the transmission in her van. She and her boyfriend then shared his truck to get the kids off to school and both of them to work.
We called this man named Jeffery about a Saturn and a Grand Marquis he had privately listed in the paper. He told us he obtained these cars from the elderly who could no longer drive.
We drove about an hour and a half to his address in Seminole.
We discovered a small lot with only about 4 cars. We tested each vehicle and finally decided on the Marquis.
We expressed to this Jeffrey that we wanted to have the car looked at by a mechanic before we could make any final decisions.
He took us to a near mechanic who was unable to look at the car.
We were now short on time because we had to pick the kids up from school.
He told us he had gotten three other calls on the vehicle and if we were interested to put a deposit on the car.
So we did just that with the understanding that this was a deposit of good faith and we would return the following day to have a mechanic check the car.
We brought a good friend with us with mechanical experience and he found silver shavings mixed in with the oil.
He recommended we not buy this car. When we asked for our deposit back he laughed at us and told us to call the police because he was not going to give it back.
My daughter who works at Arby's raising two small children was desperately in tears. At $5.35 an hour it takes a long time to save up $500.00 dollars.
We have a deposit receipt that is very misleading and am not sure if there is any legal recourse.
