I am currently experiencing a nightmare with the AAMCO dealership in Brooklyn. I took my car there yesterday and was told that the total cost will be $965.00.
The dealer just called me back to say that the cost is now $1780.00. I received a receipt from the dealer saying that the cost will be $965.00. He told me today that if I am not willing to pay the $1780.00, I MUST pay $565 to put my car back together with no repairs.
They doubled the price quoted, then demanded that I pay or I will not get my car back, and even if I pay the $565.00, I konw that based on the dealer's attitude, he will spitefully do more damage to my car.
My car was functioning when I took it in yesterday. The transmission was skipping occasionally and I wanted to make sure that everything was ok. I had a diagnostic done on it which said that the transmission needed to be adjusted NOT replaced or rebuild.
I trusted the AAMCO company because I thought that they were a reputable company and I was wrong.

Greetings,
I too had to take a car to AAMCO and was quoted a $2500 rebuild and that didn't cover anything that they AAMCO might have found wrong or had to replace, this was the exact words the salesman said to me...
I took the vehicle to another transmission shop that found it was a ground wire for the car's turbo that wasn't connected and that's what was causing the shifting problems payed $5.00 as opposed to the $2500 stay away from AAMCO the only word in thier vocabulary is rebuild!

AAMCO Rip-off - BUYER BEWARE (#4836)
They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report:
Their email: abmtu@aol.com
Their relationship to the company: Owner of another AAMCO
Rebuttal:
This does not sound like standard aamco practice. It seems as if you misunderstood and if you received a copy of an estimate you should have read it before writing your little story.
When you take your car into the center and tell them what is wrong, you are sold a minor diagnostic service, also known as the external diagnostic service.
After the diagnostic the center will let you know if the problem is internal or external. If the problem is internal they will give you a base price. The base price includes the cost of labor to repair your transmissions.
The center can't give you a complete price until they look inside of your transmission and let you know what hard parts are damaged and if you need a torque convertor.
When this is determined, you will be informed of the cost of hard parts which are additional and the cost of the torque
converter, which is also additional. This is clearly written on the paperwork you were given. Read it and understand it. If you need further information, contact the center and they will give you more details.
In this case the AAMCO center is not wrong. This is a written policy they are following. Sorry for any misspellings.
