I just received my insurance billing for my four vehicles from "The Hartford / AARP". My premium beginning 3-1-2010 went up WAY over DOUBLE what I was paying in 2009. I have been with Hartford over 18 years. I was shocked, but should have been somewhat prepared after AARP essentially gutted their medigap insurance programs. Upon calling Hartford / AARP I was told there had been an "across the board increase" on premiums. I have never had a claim with Hartford. In dialogue that followed, I was told I was essentially flagged for an additional premium increase because I am now too old. Gee! And this from an organization (AARP) to whom Ive dutifully paid membership for 19 years that alludes to being an entity that has benefits for retirees and seniors. AARP continually and quite actively seeks new members declaring all the advantages of membership.
.
I gave up on their medigap insurance long ago, and received considerably better coverage and rates by simply calling several multi-line insurance agents.
.
As for the vehicle insurance debacle, an internet search resulted in a quotation from another (Nationally known) company who insured all four of my vehicles for less than Hartford / AARP wanted for my motorhome alone. After the internet search and a following phone contact with the new company, I literally had "new policy in hand" in 45 minutes. It was e mailed to me and I printed out the entire document and proof of insurance cards. Three days later the policy package arrived in the mail anyway.
.
I might be old, but Im far from being a doddering old man. Im as active as Ive ever been, and can still keep the teens in sight while on my 250 dirt bike. AARP- "Looking out for seniors". Yeah, sure: AARP looking out for AARP. I finally got "too old" for AARP to be of any benefit. What a slap in the face! I guess Ill be obliged to seek out an entity with a different acronym, something like AAOF !
