AARP has turned into one of the biggest rip-off organizations in the country. They advertise on TV and in Text that they can give you medical insurance if you find yourself without coverage - all you have to do is join their organization and apply for the coverage. The company I worked for closed and the medical plan we had was terminated so there was no COBRA benefits that would even allow is to continue the coverage if we paid for it ourselves.

I joined AARP and applied for the coverage for myself and my wife. We are 61 and 62 yrs old, have had some problems over the last few years but right now both are very healthy. Both of us were rejected for medical coverage. I have written AARP and all they say is they don't handle the medical insurance, it is handled by United HealthCare Insurance Company.

I get nowhere talking to them as they are an insurance company to make money and if they think you might have a claim within the next year, they reject you. I have also written to AARP asking for my membership money back and have heard nothing. BOTH COMPANIES ARE RIP OFFS.

AARP AND OBAMA CARE

AUTHOR: Cmiquel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Notice the many AARP commercials for medical Supplement plans??

The deal made with the Obama Administration was this; once the medicare cuts are applied and the Medicare Advantage Plans eliminated, AARP is in a position to now offer Medicare Supplement plans or "gap" insurance.

The Advantage plans pay the 20% medicare does not pay and are very little if any cost to the Senior.  Although, there are some co-pays and other expenses, the Insurance companies under the Moderization act receive revenues for each Advantage Plan senior enrollee.

The Medical Supplement Plans are expensive, ranging from about $120+ to $160 monthly with annual increases, depending upon the Plan offered.

I ripped up my AARP card, returned it to them and will dedicate my life to their demise.
Educate as many seniors as you can about this rip off.

The AARP plan you speak about is considered "supplemental health insurance" and you may have some options open to you.

I am a licensed insurance agent in Ohio with more than 30 years experience. I always tell people to read their policies and if they do not understand anything in it to highlight it and ask their agent to explain it. I am also a member of AARP and I have seen their health insurance material. It is primarily supplemental coverage that is not designed to be an individual's primary source of health insurance.

As far as you not being eligible for COBRA contunuation, the state of Ohio does offer a six month continuation for those people not under COBRA and you should inquire with the department of insurance about that. Also if you can obtain a "certificate of credible coverage" from your previous insurance company, you may be able to purchase an individual major medical policy under HIPAA. However if you have pre-existing conditions, such a policy will be very expensive.

There is a 63 day "window" under HIPAA where you can purchase such a policy. That "window" opens the first day your group insurance ends. Once the 63 days passes, then you are S.O.L.

AARP'S "Supplemental" Insurance

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 12, 2007

I work for a company which deals with medical claims.

One of our previous collectors once told me that AARP'S "Supplemental" insurance plans is a rip-off.

She said that after the members primary insurance pays their portion and AARP'S insurance company gets the bill for the remaining portion, more times than not, the insurance company will deny the claim saying, "The main insurer paid as much as we would pay, therefore, we're denying the claim."

Does the word "rip-off" mean anything?

AARP

You so right about AARP. I was a member for a year, and discovered that I had wasted the money I paid them for membership dues. With every "benefit" they offered, I found it elsewhere for less money. Everything from insurance to travel to hotel rooms. Sometimes even with the same company, I was able to get better pricing than by going through AARP. Yes, they are indeed a BIG rip off.
