Acorn Stairlifts, Inc. will not honor its warranies for a stairlift costing over $2,000 sold to us in December 2006. We paid extra for a lifetime warranty.
In short, they allege that it's the dealer's responsibility; dealer says it's Acorn's responsibility.

The stairlift broke down within the one year warranty period. Any attempts to contact tech support were frustrating with many delays. Finally, Acorn recommended a repairman (at our expense), who said he couldn't repair it, that it was possibly a computer board problem.

Acorn charged us for the new computer board, which did not solve the problem. (They did refund this cost, but only weeks after we returned it.) An indepentent electrician could not repair the stairlift either.

We reported Acorn to the BBB; Acorn said it had done all it could do. Consequently, we have a stairlift that doesn't work. have spent almost a year making numerous calls and emails with no result, but added expense--Acorn has employed delaying tactics, and now say they aren't responsible; the dealer is.

Now we are out over $2,000--and have a stairlift that doesn't work and cannot be repaired, even by Acorn's techs and repair people.

As a disabled senior citizen on a fixed income. I'm reporting my experience in hopes that others in my situation do not fall victim to this company. Incidentally, the dealer no longer sells Acorn stairlifts because of poor customer service.

Acorn lifetime warranty/repair issue

AUTHOR: Linda - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, September 06, 2010

There is no such thing as a lifetime warranty on an Acorn stairlift, EXCEPT for the motor/gearbox.  I really feel that this is a bogus story.

As the authorized dealer for Acorn in Texas, we have worked with Acorn Stairlifts for several years and have spoken with the Tech Support team many, many times.  They are extremely knowledgeable and have always resolved any issue we have had with the stairlift.  We, as a dealer, are responsible for getting our customer's stairlift fixed when needed, which is rare occasion.  Every stairlift we have installed is working fine.  We have NEVER had a problem that was not resolved.   An ELECTRICIAN does not know how to work on a stairlift.   IF you buy from DIRECT SALES with Acorn and install the lift yourself or by a "handyman" there is a risk of that person causing the problem.  We highly recommend using a qualified dealer.

If this is true, in part, the dealer would not be allowed to sell more stairlifts he did not follow the proper guidelines from Acorn.  This person is not the fault of Acorn Stairlifts!  There has never been, to our knowledge, a stairlift that could not be repaired.  Occasionally there is a difficult problem that is hard to figure out, but they can ALL be fixed.

If this "senior citizen Undisclosed, Maryland" would like to contact me, we will probably be able to fix it over the phone.  You can call tech support and have them put you in touch with us.

I resent these types of reports that make Acorn Stairlifts appear to be unreliable.  This is not the case at all.  We have several hundred happy customers.   Linda
