My story starts on June, 14th 2006. At least that is when Active Periodicals SAY our account was started, however at the time, my husband (who was the one that signed up for this crazy thing) and I were in Nebraska for a visit, not in our home in North Carolina. So if Active called and set up an account with my husband, it would mean that they called our cell phone. And how would they get that number? I guess the Shadow knows...ha ha.
Anyway, we get back to North Carolina and I start getting strange magazines in the mail. Like Fast Company, Sporting News, and Weekly World News (you know the one I mean, the one with Bat-boy and Sasquatch on the cover). I ask my husband, "What the hell?" and he tells me that he signed up for these magazines for me. He couldn't tell me how long the contract was for, only that we would be paying 50 some dollars a month for a year. I decided to just let it go, because he was leaving for South Korea in November.
So after he leaves for his year-long tour, I change my mailing address to his mother's in Portsmouth, VA because that's where I was going to be staying. Still getting the crazy magazines, so I try to call and change them. No luck. File a complaint with the BBB, and THAT gets their attention! They call me and are very apologetic and mail me out a list of the magazines that I can change to, no problem. And everything is pretty hunky-dory for a while.
Fast forward to June 22nd, 2007. I had just landed in Nebraska, where my parents live, to live here for a while. Active calls my cell phone, and I say, "Boy am I glad you guys called, I need to change my address." So they say they will, and try to get me to renew my contract, since I am such a wonderful customer. I say no, and the guy goes on with his spiel. At least I think he does, because my cell phone was getting bad reception, I was jet-lagged, and I was fixing a bottle for my daughter.
Come to find out the next time I check my bank account, that they had signed me up for another account! I called them up and said, "The hell I did, lady" and she said, "Oh yes you did, we have you on tape" And I figure there is nothing I can do. So I ask, "well What is the address you have on file?" and it is the address in Virginia! I told them to change the address back and cancel my second account.
I wound up paying 300 to cancel both accounts and haven't got any magazines (except for one stray Sporting News) since. I don't know if they are getting any mags at my mother-in-law's house. I called Active every day until I got a letter in the mail saying my accounts have been closed. I finally got it, and just got off the phone with them telling them that they need to lose any information they have on me.
p.s. I find it very humorous that when you Google "Active Periodicals" you don't even get their website, just a bunch of sites that have people complaining about them. :)
