I am writing this on behalf of my friend who was screwed ROYALLY by Air Jamaica. I myself have been travelling to Jamaica for over 20 years and must say each experience with the airline has had some super glitches. This experience takes the cake however.

Anyway, I had gone ahead to Jamaica on a Saturday and my friend was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. We live in Austin and both drove to Houston to take an early morning non stop flight to Montego Bay. I made it, she almost didn't. Air Jamaica didn't care.

You see, what this flim flam airline run by a bunch of troglodytes failed to mention to my friend when she purchased her ticket is that they had PERMANENTALLY CANCELLED the flights from Houston to Montego Bay during the week. She actually found out they had cancelled this schedule BEFORE she booked her flight, but must have not informed the ticketing office. After the fact, the CSR from the airline simply said, "Well what do you want me to do about it? You eventually made it there didn't you? Sometimes people make mistakes." WHAT?!

Anyway, my poor friend, who is a hard working corporate gal and only gets the typical miniscule American vacation time, drove all the way to Houston in the middle of the night to find her flight no longer existed and no one bothered to tell her. When she called ahead to verify the reservation, NO ONE told her the flights were cancelled. Once she arrived to an empty ticket stand to find a handful of other hopeful passengers standing there bewildered, the Air Jamaica people just stared at the wayward passengers in that moronic comatose way of theirs, shrugged their shoulders and asked her and the fellow passengers in their lovely Patois tinged accents, "Well, what do you expect us to do?" HUH? LET HER FLY FREE PERHAPS? REFUND HER MONEY?

Instead they re-routed her through Miami (nightmare airport, this is why we went through Houston), where she had to sit four 8 hours and wait for the next flight to Jamaica. She was supposed to arrive by 2pm, but did not get there until 11pm, thus losing a day of precious vacation time. What really fires me up is how uncaring the Air Jamaican staff was. I realize these people could probably care less about the problems of "spoiled Americans", but we do spend our hard earned money to fly there and their employees shouldn't act like a bunch of indifferent sloths.

A Jamaican perspective

AUTHOR: Andrea - (Jamaica)

POSTED: Friday, April 02, 2004

I'm very sure Air Jamaica and Jamaicans really do not need such ignorant people sitting in their passenger seats and sullying their country.

Such bigoted comments about pot heads and patois tinged accents highlight the ignorance of Tracy from Austin. All Jamaicans do not walk around in a drug induced state! If a survey were to be carried out the percentage of Jamaicans who have actually smoked the ILLEGAL drug maybe would surprise your narrow mind. Also all Jamaicans do not speak patois, it is a dialect not usually favoured by well educated, socially and culturally aware people. I would suggest that in future you do a bit of research on the country you intend to visit and the people that live there. You see Jamaicans the way you do and some Jamaicans see you American female tourists as loose women coming down to have meaningless sex with gigolos on the beach and smoke ganja. I guess we all have our stereotypes.

Individuals who are accostomed to travelling know that reconfirming reservations in advance is essential, also giving the airline contact information makes it easier for contact to be made with the individual in the event of cancellations etc. As you do not seem to be very well exposed I hope that bit of information helps you.

Love Flying Air Jamaica

AUTHOR: Victoria - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 03, 2003

I travel a lot to the caribbean, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Grand Cayman, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Grenada. and I love flying Air Jamaica! I wouldn't have it any other way. So sorry you seem to have had a bad experience, but the 20+ times I 've flown on Air Jamaica has been great. Even when flights were delayed it was always an enjoyable experience. I even feel safest flying them over American Airlines. And what other airline serves you hot food and chamagne free? Anyway, I'm not saying that you/your friend are lying but I find that very hard to believe! I've been screwed over by American Airlines, Delta and Northwest before but never Air Jamaica.

NEVER and I mean NEVER fly with Jamaican Airlines

AUTHOR: Steve - (United Kingdom)

POSTED: Saturday, November 08, 2003

Trust me, if you ever go on holiday or business to Jamaica in the West Indies, NEVER and I mean NEVER fly with Jamaican Airlines. I have used many airlines over the years and in the last few years in particularly, I have travelled the globe extensively attending conferences, exhibitions and the occasional family holiday. Never in all my life have I come accross an airline as bad as Jamaican Airlines, give me British Airways or Continental any day. I wasn't just the laid back attitude of the staff, it was the whole experience from start to finish. I could go on for hours but in brief, we paid over 10,000 for this holiday and as the flight was over 11 hous long, we decided that we would travel First Class. The electric seats didn't work, the built in TVs either didn't work at all or the picture quality was so poor that you couldn't really see what you were watching. Half of the films were unavailable because either the video tapes were damaged or the video player heads needed cleaning or maintenance. The games option on your seat console didn't work, we never got a satisfactory explanation to this one.

Melissa from Philly

AUTHOR: Mario - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 20, 2003

First off:

Melissa get off your high horse. You and that Mark from Alrington, TX need to both do that with a quickness. Gettign tired enough of his drivel as it is.

I picked up on Tracy's comments right off the bat. Obviously her friend did not find out that the flight was discontinued untill she showed up at the airport to depart. You guys need to use your head before you rebutt.

2nd:

In order to be a racist, you have to not like the race of a person. Jamaican is not a race! When filling out government forms or job applications that ask for race, do you see Jamaican as an option? Or for that matter, do you see Canadian? What about Belgian? Or Latvian? What about American? Is that listed?

I am so sick and damned tired of you PC thugs!! These people have had bad experiences with AJ, leave them alone. They don't need you trying to make it worse.

No Matt, YOU think first buddy

AUTHOR: Tracy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 03, 2003

Give us some credit here! Do you think my friend would be dumb enough to book a flight if she knew the route was cancelled?? What I meant was the ticket office knew the route was cancelled but DID NOT inform my friend of this. She found this out THE DAY SHE TRAVELLED. Of course it would be her fault if she booked the flight knowing it was cacelled. AJ knew it was, but did not tell her this. Sorry for the confusion...

What a bunch of racists

AUTHOR: Melissa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 02, 2003

You people are so racist! If you have such a big problem with Air Jamaica why don't you fly U.S. Air or American Airlines? I'm not Jamaican, but this kind of talk and behavior is appalling. You people make me sick to think I would have to sit next to someone who thinks that way. "Pot smoking idiots?" Wow... SO quick to sterotype someone huh? Not everyone that works at Air Jamaica IS Jamaican. Think about that. Now from the original post it says and I quote "She actually found out they had cancelled this schedule BEFORE she booked her flight, but must have not informed the ticketing office." So she did find out that it was already cancelled but still went ahead and booked it. Not Air Jamaica's fault. Period.

Read her complaint again....

AUTHOR: Kim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 22, 2003

In the complaint it does not say the passenger knew about the cancelled flights out of Houston, but that she said AJ had cancelled the flights before she even made her reservation, she obviously found this out after the fact.

I think those morons at AJ smoke too much pot. Kinda scary when you think about what half baked moron is flying their jets.

That womans treatment was appaling and yes she does deserve a few ticket, at the very least. She drove hours out of her way and lost a whole day of vacation because the idiots at AJ cannot simply make a phone call letting her know her flight has been cancelled.

I flew AJ years ago, of course my flight arrived very late, they have the worst ontime performance of any aitline, and my food tray looked like somebody had ralphed all over it and never cleaned up. Nice!!

Tracy, I hope your friend gets better treatment next time and better compensation. i would never fly AJ again if I were her.

Think First

AUTHOR: Matt - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 22, 2003

Tracy,

In your post (regarding your friend), you said that "She actually found out they had cancelled this schedule BEFORE she booked her flight, but must have not informed the ticketing office."

My question is, WHY would your friend continue booking a reservation KNOWING FULL WELL that the route has been cancelled..? Just because she wanted to fly out of a specific airport and the website software allowed her to do it, does not mean that the Airline itself is totally in error. Just because you CAN do something does not mean that you SHOULD do it.

Yes the website reservation system should not have allowed your friend to book a cancelled route, but if she KNEW the route was cancelled, and continued to book the route, then she is at fault as well.

There has to be some sort of personal responsibility in the mix here. I know what a hassle it is to have to re-route on the day of travel, but it seems to me that this could have been avoided with some responsible planning.
