I applied to the American Intercontinental University ( AIU) to get a degree in Education. I specifically stated to the counselor that I wanted to further my education in the Education field so I could teach in the public school system. The advisor stated that this was possible with AIU. I went through the process of writing why I should be admitted then was accepted into what i thought was the Masters of Education program.
After the first class which was predominately about computers and writing assignments. I questioned if I was in the correct classes. The advisor stated that the "world of teaching" had changed and that the classrooms were using more technology to teach the students. Since I had been out of school for several years and needed the experience I trusted them. I questioned several classes after that and was told that they were needed for the Education Degree. I saw online that they had a Master degree of Education that stated 'Curriculum" , I asked what was the difference and said that I was probably more equipment for the curriculum field of education then all of the technology classes I was taking. The advisor stated to me that I would have both with my degree and would be able to teach online classes as well as classroom students.
Needless, to say that not only was I charged automatically and still owe over 25,000 dollars for a 10 month degree that did not involve any student teaching. When I asked about student teaching since I know you have to do this in order to teach. They said next" term" which would have been in January of 2006 , we would begin teaching components.
When I asked again in January I was told I would be graduating February 5, 2006 with a Master of Education , minor in Instructional Design. I did not ask for this degree and wasted money that I feel was more expensive than they initially stated and was billed automatically to a loan that was suppose to have been for 5,000 ONLY. I signed a paper for that amount not recurring payments for 29,000 for 10 months.
Even after I questioned the validity of the degree from the staff and faculty I have received no response. I was glad to see that others have had this problem and they just did not take advantage of me. AIU lied about the degree which was suppose to be a 2 year Master program for Education. The department of Education stated that there has to be a major in Education for an example; Science, Technology , etc. Receiving a degree that just says Education is a waste of time and money.
