I made a dispute against allyoucanbooks.com with PayPal. In retaliation, they canceled the service I had purchased. Now they won't refund my money.
I subscribed to allyoucanbooks.com's service on the 20th of December, using PayPal.com. On the 5th of January my free trial period ended and my PayPal account was debited for $14.99 (Unique Transaction ID #8D094446GW0656802).
I did not recognize the transaction when I was notified of it, so I entered a dispute with PayPal.com (PayPal Case ID:PP-002-875-245-625). But before I did that I canceled my account (over the phone) with allyoucanbooks.com so that my PayPal account would not be debited again. allyoucanbooks.com sent me an email stating the following "You can continue using the service until 02/05/2014".
Shortly thereafter I remembered that I had made the transaction, so I canceled my dispute with PayPal. I then tried to use the service at allyoucanbooks.com. When I discovered that my account did not have any download buttons on any of the book pages, I called allyoucanbooks.com and inquired as to why this was. The person I spoke with told me that because I had canceled my account the service was no longer available to me, this despite the fact that my Paypal account had already been debited for one month of service. I told the representative that I had received an email from them which stated that I could continue using the service until 02/05/2014. She confirmed to me that that email had been sent, and then she told me she would escalate the issue. She then told me that I would receive an email containing allyoucanbooks.com's resolution.
The email I received on Jan. 6 at 9:00 p.m. reads as follows:
Hello,
This is to inform you that because you opened a dispute with PayPal your All You Can Books account is permanently canceled and you will not be able to use the site due to the dispute.
Regards,
All You Can Books Management
I called allyoucanbooks.com today (Jan. 7, 2014) and told them that if I was not going to receive the service that I paid for I expected a full refund. I was flatly denied.
So, even after I was informed by email that I could continue to use the service into February, I was told over the phone that I could not use the service because I had canceled it. Then I received an email telling me that I was not entitled to the subscription I purchased because I filed a dispute with PayPal. This seems retaliatory and unjustly punitive.
Today (01/07/2014) I called PayPal to confirm that my dispute had been canceled. It had not. So I canceled it again, this time making sure that it had been done by confirming the cancellation on my online account. This time I'm sure it is done.
I then called back allyoucanbooks.com to let them know that the cancellation was complete. The woman I spoke with told me that I should have service until February 5th(!?). She asked me if I could download any books with my account. When I told her no, she told me that she would escalate the issue to their technical department and that I should receive an email from them in 24 to 48 hours. Hmm, I wonder what this email will say.
The matter is up in the air right now. I will either get my money or I will get my service. If I can't get one or the other I will continue in my effort to receive restitution.
Resolution: I called PayPal tonight (01/09/2014) and asked if they had been able to recover their money from allyoucanbooks.com. They told me that they had and that they were looking into placing limitations against allyoucanbooks.com due to complaints from many customers. Jubilated, I told the representive I was speaking to how happy I was to know that allyoucanbooks.com did not profit.
