We purchased our home in 1988 and chose Allstate Insurance to insure the house. We signed up for their PREMIUM policy which was supposed to cover everything at replacement cost. For the next eight years, we paid our premiums and never had need to file a claim. The "FRAN" (huricane 1996) came through. We filed a claim, an adjustor approved the claim and we received a check.
Next came a severe wind storm (1997) and again we filed;Allstate paid. Then came huricane Floyd; again we had damage and filed. When we had our 20" snow in January we had some damage and filed.
Allstate paid the claim and then "REFUSED TO RENEW" our policy. They claimed we had too many claims in four years and were a "RISK".

We were never a "RISK" when we were paying our premiums for 8 years without so much as a broken window; then when we really need them they bail out and leave us to pay higher premiums because we are a "RISK"

Rebuttal to Ex-Allstate policy holder

AUTHOR: Rae - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, February 19, 2002

Why should you, who has had numerous losses, pay the same homeowner premium amount as me, who has never had a claim/loss? That doesn't seem fair. I can understand 1 claim but to have one year after year is ridiculous.

Some very close friends had a similar situation happen to them. I was livid at what I thought was such shoddy treatment of these wonderful people who had faithfully paid their insurance premiums for decades and then had 4 losses in 4 years; and was non-renewed. However, my insurance agent (who is not Allstate agent but an independent agent) sat me down and we talked about this situation. It isn't reasonable that someone with a bunch of losses should pay the same amount of insurance premium as I do (someone without any losses). The catastrophic claims are what we buy insurance for. Not the ones that we can cover ourselves like I suspect the last claim was. That's when you need an agent who tells you that although he cannot stop you from filing a claim the end result may be a non-renewal. And, your agent should have gone over the claim with you to determine if you really, really, really, needed to file that last claim even with the end result being a non-renewal.

Because of this little lesson in insurance from my agent so many years ago; I refuse to file a claim over any situation until I call and talk to my agent. Hence, I have excellent premiums on my autos, homes, and recreational vehicles. Additionally, it really bothers me that people think insurance should pay for and put them in a better financial situation than they were before when in reality insurance is meant to "indemnify" a situation - put back like before.

I'm sure this rebuttal will not change your mind about how you've been "ripped off" but hopefully someone else will read this and make their own insurance agent work for the commissions they are paid. Oh, everyone is a "Risk". The definition of risk is "chance of loss" and we all fit into that category. Good luck to you!
