The Amcore Bank in my town, also uses deceptive practices, to get (& I'm betting; pocketing), NSF fees. If I have money in my account to cover a check, (even tho it's supposed to be done "electronically"), sometimes it don't clear my bank account for 5 days! When the money isn't in there, it will try to process twice in 2 days! It is sooooo obvious that they are not returning my checks once they have bounced, & allowing them to come back thru a second time. They just say that is has been returned, then the next day, they say they try to "run it thru again".
Other family members have had the same problems at other banks in this town, so I guess you basically get ripped off no matter what bank you go to
They have so many schemes in place to charge you extra money, & "they are never wrong", so it's no use arguing with them.
If I ever came into alot of money, I wouldn't care about the interest, I would bury it, or hide it!!

You in fact DID NOT have the money in the account to cover the check. Do you really think that if a check doesn't clear in one or two days, you can go out and spend the money again?

You can prevent overdraft fees

If you'll keep an accurate register of your account, and subtract every check/debit at the time it's done, it won't matter how long it takes for a check to clear. You'll know how much money you really have available.
It's not "deceptive" to charge overdraft fees to a customer who overdrafts. It's not a rip-off. It's something that is entirely within YOUR power to avoid.
