I have a current plaint with American Airlines. On July 27 I received an email
from them with the Subject U.S. On Sale | Fares As Low
As $43. So, naive person that I am, I went to
their website and requested fares for specific dates in September, flying from
Baltimore to Denver, round trip. Up popped quite a few with a fare as low as
$133 round trip. There were four that could have worked for me, but when I
clicked on each of them, it turned out that that fare was "Not
available." This clearly is a scam, it is evident that no such fares
actually exist and no one could possibly obtain them. Someone should expose
this fraud. I wasted time on a fruitless effort in trying to take advantage of
an offer that American Airlines sent to me unsolicited. This is infuriating and
they should not be allowed to play the classic "bait and switch" game
at a time when such frauds are so easily exposed on the internet, even if also
in the newspapers.

Seriously? You didn't spend any money and at most lost a few minutes to see if they had any flights. It probably took you longer to write this "ripoff" than you actually lost in looking for flights.
I guess you were the only one in the United States that received this special e-mail. So because of this it has to be a scam because there is no way that they could have sold those seats before you tried to look them up. That is what you are saying right? Well sorry you are not that special. That same e-mail was probably sent to 1,000,000 other people. Not to mention their web site has the same promotion and who knows where else they are advertising.
Anyways the advertisement does say "As low as". If you traveled much at all you would know that the lowest fares are going to be limited in the number of seats available, and the destinations are generally going to be the short hop cities(that is generally less than an hour by plane). Also the days you fly do matter. That is you can just about forget about getting the lowest fares on Fridays or Sundays.
