In July 2008 I was robbed of $10,000.00 in Amex Travelers cheques along with numerous valuable items(camera, 2 PDA smartphone, 1 Nokia cell phone, Apple Ipod etc).. Immediately I contacted my friend in the USA an advised him to call Amex and advise them to cancel the checks.

Upon my return in October I contacted Amex and although the numerous amounts of documents requested by Amex was overwhelming I furnished each and every one within 1/2 hour of the request. Here is an example of some of the documents requested
1) Receipts of all TC's stolen
2) Copy of all pages of passport--my passport was amended with addit pgs sent approx 24 pgs
3) Bank statement showing withdrawl of cash from bank acct to buy the cheques
4) Drivers License
5) Receipt of stores where I bought items in Africa
6) Legal document showing what I was doing in Africa(sent 2)
7) 2 Business References
8) Phone numbers to the cell phones that were stolen
9) Police report requested(gave them phone# to station where report was made
10) Airline tickets showing travel to and from Africa
These are a few of the documents requested and forwarded combined with numerous phone interviews in which probing and private questions were asked of me to answer.

To date I have called American Express to inquire the status of my claim and I am ignored. This is obviously a scam that needs to be exposed quickly.. I decided to do an internet search to see if this is a SCAM..and I am shocked to learn that many persons have fallen victim to the unethical behaviour of American Express..

Please I am ready to sweat and work hard to bring this to National/International attention before others are abused and robbed. What I am hoping for is that all other claimants will read my report and many others like mine and a future CLASS ACTION lawsuit will be commenced.

Less hassle -make the safe

AUTHOR: David Drews - (Colombia)

The key problem of the TCs is that they seem ridiciliously simple to cash - and thus make a prized target. Lay you hands on the, put a signature on them, cash the, walk off. The only real clue left will be the ID details of the person whoi cashed them. Probably sufficient in most of the EU and probably also goes a long way in the USA and Canada....
but...
Ive done a lot of travelling and I know that
-loads of people in Latin America, Africa and Asia have no IDs. (Right now their looking for the owners of some 50 000 ID cards in Barranquilla, Colombia. A friend of mine was traveling under her cousins ID card 5 years ago. She was 25 and female. He 16 and male. The photo was black-and-white, the fingerprint a smudge, the thing looked like a very worn photocopy. Not that it mattered, no one ever checked it anyhow.)
-if the have IDs it might be someone elses or a fake. (You get them in Bangkok cheap enought.

How about this:
-On purchase the name of the holder is perforated into the TCs. This way the name on the check has to coincide with the ID presented on cashing. Changing the name would requiere patching up the fabric of the TCs.
- We live in the information age, register the TC numbers to the rightful owner. If they dont coincide somethings dodgy.
- use a password and secret question.

Your information is worthless and a waste of finger strength on your
keyboard..
The issue is not about an investigation...
The issue is about the companys advertisement of a refund within 24 hours..
Any intelligent human being would expect an investigation of some kind in a
case like this..however the print ads and tv advertisements does not
say that..
Maybe one day you will have $10,000 to kick around or maybe $5000 then
you can decide if I am exaggerating!
Enough said!

Look at it from a business standpoint. You are claiming that $10000 has been stolen. Comeon, of course they are going to request an extensive amount of information. If you were being deceitful, then the company would be out 10000

Refund received after much work!!..Exaggerated false advertisement??

AUTHOR: Globetrekker - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, December 13, 2008

On December 08, 2008 after a 2.5 hour meeting in my home with the American Express Security Agent who obviously realized that I was telling the truth, a check in the amount of $10,000 was received by me.
I had proved beyond a shadow of a doubt the validity of my claim..
Since July 14, 2008(date of the robbery) until Dec 08, 2008 $10,000.00
I had to work very hard submitting a mountain of documents day after day, had to tolerate numerous and probing phone interviews and finally sitting down in my private residence with Amex Security Agent and prove that the $10,000.00 was stolen and is due to me.
I felt as if I was on trial and being further traumatized and victimized by this incident.
Is there any violation of FTC laws?
Is this deceptive, exaggerated false advertisement?
Should consumers know the truth about Amex Travelers Cheques refund process?
Is this lawful behavior?
I have written this report at times with anger and frustration..Now I write so that this should not happen to anyone else.
**Consumer Alert**
American Express suggest that "Don't Leave Home Without Them"
The print ads and television advertisement promises if your travelers cheques are lost or stolen they can be replaced within 24 hours worldwide..
**Based on my report and others who have lost their cheques due to theft or loss you can decide if this is 100% accurate advertisement.**
Getting a refund I consider myself lucky!

American Express Travelers Cheques Refund..False Advertisement?

AUTHOR: Globetrekker - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 29, 2008

After being robbed in Africa of $10,000 in American Express Travelers Cheques and submitting a mountain of documents to Amex..I was visited in my home by an American Express Security Agent where he conducted a lengthy 2.5 hours in depth interview regarding the loss. Once again various documents including my passport and drivers license was requested and viewed.
Since that time I have provided the police report that was filed immediately after the robbery, receipt of payment for the report, medical letter that was provided by the police to the other victim, a 5 page letter summarizing my meeting with the American Express Security Agent along with additional supporting documents.
I think it is important that American Express advise consumers of the process when Travelers Cheques are lost or stolen so that consumers can make a choice whether to carry the cheques or cash.
The before loss format fortunately was followed by me such as signing each check, securing the cheques as you would cash, reporting the loss immediately, having all receipts for the stolen checks etc etc..
However most consumers are not aware of the importance of each and every one of these guidelines in order to obtain a replacement/refund of the cheques.
As consumers we all think that once the checks are lost or stolen, Amex cancels the cheques and no one can use them! This is not the case I have learned..Amex cannot stop payment on the checks!..So these cheques can be presented at any time for payment!
I now await reimbursement of my money $10,000 from American Express
The theft was in July 2008..
