We received an offer to sign-up for Automatic Premium Car Rental Insurance from AMEX Assurance Co.  This insurance coverage is automatically provided when the American Express Card is used to reserve and pay for a rental Car.  As advertised, the Automatic Premium Car Rental Insurance insurance premium ($24.95) per rental, is charged automatically to your card, regardless of the rental term, in lieu of the car rental customer accepting the car rental company's insurance which is charged at a daily rate.

We accepted the offer to "enroll" and requested both of our American Express Accounts be enrolled.  We received a confirmation letter from American Express (not AMEX Assurance) that one of our cards was enrolled.  Two weeks after receiving this letter, we paid for a rental car with the American Express account not listed in the confirmation letter.  After contacting American Expdress, regarding minor damage to the rental car during the rental period, we learned the rental premium for the rental period had not been charged, therefore there was no car rental protection from AMEX Assurance.  As we were not charged for any coverage during the rental period, we were not ripped-off by American Express.  American Express can not verify by phone which card is enrolled in this plan, or if they are enrolled or not enrolled.

As AMEX Assurance confirmed in writing the coverage was in effect, prior to the end of the car rental term, the Premium Car Rental Protection was assumed to have been in-place for any car rental after the confirmation date, regardless of which American Express card was used for the rental, but this is not the case.  Our own automobile policy came through and paid for the damages to the rental car, after we paid the deductable.  Do not accept any offers for insurance products from AMEX Assurance Co..  They are not American Express.  If you check them out at other consumer advoate websites, you will find numerous dissatisfied customers.
