I nearly got taken.  We were looking for my daughter a car via the internet, craigslist etc.  This site came up as one of the many dealerships which had a Mazda3 in stock.  The posting was on Auto Trader.com and appeared to be legitimate.  Once on their site I was able to view the carfax report, and look at pictures of the car.  The site claims they are a Repo broker and because they buy directly from the banks and auction houses they can offer the vehicles at incredibly low prices.  Once you find the car you like there is actually a buy this vehicle button.  The purchase instructions state that you must wire the deposit, approx. 2/3 the purchase price, to a particular individual and address and the car will be shipped within 5 days.  Once at your door you have 3 days to inspect the vehicle and pay the remaining due.  Skeptical, I clicked the online chat button on the site to see if I could fly down pay cash and drive the vehicle home myself.  Here is the copied and pasted conversation from their site:

Please wait for a site operator to respond...

Operator Maria Logan has joined the chat. Maria Logan: Hello, how may I help you?

XXXXXXXXXXX: We just clicked the would like to purchase button for a 2004 Mazda3 but would like to fly down, inspect, and pick up the vehicle in person. Do we need to make an appointment or???

Maria Logan: We win vehicles at auctions all over the country. The cars have been taken over by the government or by financial institutions or banks from people with financial woes and cannot pay for the loans that they made. Local pick-up is not available. Most of the vehicles are stored at the parking lots of banks and financial institutions. They don't have showrooms or specialized people in order to offer this service. They are pressing us to take the car from there as soon as possible. In order to avoid unnecessary shipping costs, we prefer to find a buyer and deliver the car directly to his address. You will be able to inspect the car at you home and if you decide not to keep it, we are going to refund your payment and take the car back free of charge.

XXXXXXXXXX: I have to say there is absolutely no way I am Wiring $2400 in hopes the car will be delivered to my house. If I am going to pay for this vehicle without seeing it I will only pay for it by secure means like, Visa, Bank Draft, or Pay Pal

Maria Logan: the down payment must be via MoneyGram Transfer and for the ballance use can use visa, paypal, etc

XXXXXXXXXX: Um... I think I would like to speak to the bank rep. about the actual car, then deliver the cash to you in person.

XXXXXXXXXX: Is there any way I can pay for this vehicle and have total assurance that I am not getting scammed. I will fly anywhere, bring cash, I would be happy to pick it up at the bank thus providing my own shipping.

Maria Logan: No, sorry.

I then chose to call the 1-800 # on the site to see what an operator might say regarding this.  I was told all operators were busy and was referred to their site and told to send an email request or chat with one of their operators.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

I wouldn't call it a scam yet...

But any company that goes through the trouble to not only hide the ownership of the domain that they do business on, but also the domain of their server ( starsauto-sales.com ), is not a company that I would trust.

I would not send any $ without seeing the car in person.
