Applegrove, a franchise of Applebee's, has recently instituted a paperless paycheck system. The previous statement seems innocuous enough except for the fact that each employee has had a bank account opened for them under the employees name to which the "paycheck" will be deposited. This debit account is the only option for the employee. We employees were not asked if we wanted this, given no prior information other than a verbal declaration by an assistant manager saying we would be going to a paperless system soon, and did not read or sign anything in advance of the most recent paycheck to this effect. The account details are absolutely horrendous. There are fees all over this account. Examples of which include:
-a 25 cent fee everytime you enter your pin number for a POS(Point of Sale)transaction with this card
-a one dollar fee just to talk to someone about your account on the phone
-a $1.50 fee for an atm withdrawal
-a $1.50 fee for an ATM balance inquiry
and
-$10.00/hour for account research(I don't know what that is but it sounds very vague so they may apply it almost anytime)
Also, if the employee moves on from applebee's they are solely responsible for the account. This is not right.
If I went to a bank to get an account I would reject this one quickly and find another bank. No employee was given a choice however.
Applegrove also does not offer direct deposit to the account of the employees choice unless you are a manager. Why would that be so hard? This is direct deposit to an account. The only difference is Applebee's/Applegrove chose it. There has got to be some legal right violated here.
The Bank the account was issued with is called Meta Bank of South Dakota.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Check your state laws

I don't know the state laws of your state, but its perfectly legal for a company to do this in the state of missouri. In my state an employer can pay you in whatever method they choose so long as they pay you. Which means they can force you in to a direct deposit situation. Its unusual that they will not let you have it sent to an account of your choice. I would do some reasearch to make sure this part if legal.
Unfortunately in most states a company can force you to go to a paperless direct deposit system whether you sign anything or not. If I were you, I would withdraw every dime in one transaction and be done with it every month.
