Management is horrible at this Airway location in El Paso, TX. I bought my sister a gift card from a San Antonio Applebee's and for some reason it didn't show up on their system when she tried using it at this Applebee's in El Paso and it happened to be that I was in town (El Paso) when she used it. Bottom line it was the SA Applebee's fault for not scanning it right (and I showed them the receipt I had for the GC) but when I talked to the manager at this El Paso restaurant, Joe Lieu, he said there was nothing they could do because they are separate fanchises. He didn't care about the customer he just cared about keeping the money in the same franchises which as a customer I shouldn't have to worry about. I asked him if he would just take the gift card and receipt that I had and give us a $20 credit for our meal we just had and he refused. It a small amount of $20 and he still couldn't help us. Now I have to deal with the problem and take the GC back to the store I bought it at to get my money back. I will never go to this Applebee's or any Applebee's again because there is no such thing as Customer Service! They are too concerned about keeping $20 in one franchise and not the other. I was embarrased that this happened to me at the restaurant and there was no help from management. It was a small gift for my sister but they turned it into a huge problem.
Chili's is 10 times better anyways!

I consider myself a rather savvy consumer. Nonetheless, if I buy an "Applebee's Gift Card" and it doesn't specifically limit its validity at a certain store or chain of franchises, I would expect that the card is universally acceptable.
I, therefore, agree with the OP that, in the least, the El Paso location should have taken the card and either ate the loss or send it over to the other franshise for reimbursement. To quibble over a recoupable $20 and simaltaneously alienate customers is just bad business.
In my opinion, Applebees is overpriced and usually quite disappointing anyways. Next time my family is contemplating a trip to Applebees, I'll do the OP a favor and go to Chili's or, better yet, a locally owned, non-chain establishment instead.
By the way, Applebees, stop being so chincy with the drinks.
Best regards!

I'm sorry anon. had a bad experience but many people don't understand that just because the name on a store orrestaraunt is the same does not mean that Appleby's, or Chilli's, or any other company owns that store. You wouldn't buy a gift card at Chilli's and expect Appleby's to honor it, would you? Think of it like this - you went to Fred's Appleby's and gave fred money. Then you ate at Ben's Appleby's and wanted him to give you the 20 bucks you gave to Fred. The money is in Fred's pocket, not Ben's! The two probably don't even know each other. You have to get the money from the person who made the mistake on the card, not the person who made the mistake of owning a store with the same name as the one that ripped you off. Sorry, but they're not really rich big business. They're probably just small business owners trying to get by in this economy the same as the rest of us. Give the latter guy a break. It wasn't his fault.
