On more than one occassion I have filled my gas tank at Arco's AM/PM gas stations. On at least 2 occassions at the location in Oakdale(have 3 receipts) I topped-off my tanks, and the gallons of gas on the pump & on the receipts show that I put in 18+ gallons of gas (18.49, and 18.867). On another occassion (this time at the Riverbank AM/PM) my tank also took more than 18 gallons of gas - per THEIR counters...
I checked my owner's manual, finally, as I always thought my tank was about a 16 gallon tank. My owner's manual specifies that the max. capacity for my vehicle's tank is 17.5 gallons.
Now, I've filled up at other gas stations, even when my car was bone-dry and the gas has never exceeded 17 gallons. I've only encountered this with the Arco AM/PM's listed above.
No wonder AM/PM can offer their gas at $.05 to $.20 cheaper than other companies- because they probably calibrate their pumps to put less gas in your tanks than what the pump is reading (example: reads you've filled up with 19 gallons, when you really only got 17.5). What's 10 cents less than other competitors, when they can squeeze an extra $3.00 to $6.00 per consumer with us not knowing the wiser... That's how they turn their profit...

Should never top off your gas tank

Many gas dispensers ow have what is called a Stage 2 vapory recovery system; it helps protect the environment from fumes from the pumps. These pumps do not allow for people to top off successfully... you are actually puttin over 75% of the gas you "pumped" back into the fuel tanks in the ground. It does this because as you top off your car you are creating much more fumes than you are when you just pump gas.
This is why all stage 2 vapor recovery fuel dispensers say right on the dispenser: DO NOT TOP OFF (Or something very similar). I am only speaking of vapor 2 recovery systems (which most gas stations in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana are required to be. While I know the specifics of this type of system; alot of the systems out there that are used to reduce airborne toxins from fuel dispensers operate the same way and almost EVERY fuel pump will tell you not to TOP OFF your tank. They tell you that because A) It creates excess fumes and B) They know that when you do that you are actually backflowing gas and will be perplexed when you see your receipt and wonder how you can pump more gas than the size of your tank.

When it clicks off... simply round to the nearest ten cents and be done :)

The tank may only hold a certain amount, but if you topped off like you said you're also putting gas in the filler tube. My car has a 12.5 gallon tank, but if I top it off I can put in well over 13.
