When in my home to check out my heating system the technician showed me that the capacitor in one furnace was below spec. I asked the price and was told $170. I then went online and found that this part generally sells in the $10 to $20 range. When confronted with this the technician lectured this former CEO about how his company has to make a profit to stay in business!
A second technician came to check out my hot water heater as part of that same service. He pointed out correctly that the anode rod was practically gone. He quoted $305 as the price of that part. I again went online and found the exact part for $18 but got no Business 101 lecture.
Needless to say I did no purchase either of these items.
