I have recently begun a refinance of my house after a divorce from my ex wife, in order to remove her name from the mortgage. The mortgage company I am working with informs me that they have found a lien placed on the title by Asset Acceptance company for $1800+ interest and court cost that dates back to 2001, I bought the place with what was supposed to have a clear title in 2002 from my father. Asset Acceptance continually calls my home phone number and asks for someone that sounds like a made up name and tells them to call back about a debt. This person does not live here, nor have they lived here to the best of my knowledge, so i ignore the calls. My father (the previous owner) or myself have never been informed by this company of any alleged debt in our name, and they obviously couldn't sue either of us or they would have already done so. This alleged debt has nothing to do with us. I am afraid to even talk to these people with a track record like they have. It seems they break many laws and still seem to get away with it. Now I have to do research and waste my time to find out how to get this lien discharged off of my house, so I can refinance. More than likely This will involve a lawyer and time and money. Did they not check the names on the title to see if they match with the names on the accounts that they believe they are owed? Did they not care whose home they are placing a lien on? This seems malicious and costly. If anyone knows their proper physical address and can give some insight on how to file with FTC, the Ohio Attorney General, and the better business bureau for their state please let me know.
