My parents recently hired Eddy Jabre, the owner of Atrium Custom Homes to build their home in Colrain MA. At first, he sweet talked them, and they trusted him. They truly believed he was a good person and would do a good job. After he designed their home, doing a good job actually, they trusted him enough to hire Eddy as their contractor. They paid for everything in advance, putting their entire life savings into his hands. He charged very expensive rates, which would have been okay if he had done what he was supposed to. I remember my dad asking me if I thought $800 for a shower door was expensive- not a glass door, not an entire shower unit, just a plastic shower door. That's just one small example of his con.
Eddy Jabre took over $20,000 for work that he NEVER did. He stopped returning their calls, and finally sent an "apology" letter, saying that the economy hit him hard and he wouldn't be able to do the work. Whether that's true or not, he took their money to do work, and now he claims he does not have the money and will not do the work.
To make matters worse, the work he did have done was far below subpar. Within 1 year, the roof of my parents house started leaking terribly, and water was literally pouring into their house, causing permanent damage to wood and paint. The jacuzzi was broken during the installation, and he refuses to fix it. The workers he had build the house were probably illegal aliens, and were not certified- they didn't speak a word of English, and would consistently drink on the job, without even hiding it. One night, my parents came back when the house was still in construction, and found an empty 30 rack around the worker's area. To this day, their are Bud light cans from the workers spread all over the property. They had no clue what they were doing, and screwed up all kinds of things. Now the porch roof has to be completely re-done, because it was not designed to allow water to drain. According to the experts my parents have had to bring in to fix all kinds of things, nothing was built with things like carpenter's squares and standard carpenter practices that new houses should be constructed with. Sliding drawers in the kitchen are already falling apart, the light and fan in one of the bathrooms was never hooked up, and this list goes on. Eddy of course will not fix anything, and will not do the $20k of other work that my parents prepaid him to have done. I keep telling my dad to sue him, but my parents are such nice people, that they are reluctant to dedicate their time to such negativity, although I think I'm pretty close to convincing them to do so.
I hope that justice will be served in the court of law, and hope to see you there soon Mr. Con Man.

Resolved!

I tried my best to have my report removed, but ripoffreport.com will not remove it or even respond to my request to do so. If I could remove it, I would, because this seems to be a freak situation that stains the reputation of an otherwise very good home designer. Everything has been resolved now. After looking at everything in retrospect, Eddy has been in business for about 20 years, and doesn't seem to have a single other complaint written about him anywhere. His record with the BBB was spotless until this happened, and he has made a sincere effort to remedy the situation. The jacuzzi is now getting fixed by the company responsible for breaking it, which was not Atrium Custom Homes. My parent's home that Eddy designed is absolutely gorgeous. It's hands down the nicest custom modular home I have ever seen, and after everything negative I said, Eddy is responsible for making that happen. The panaromic windows provide breathtaking views. High quality, brand name components were used throughout. Yes, there were a few issues like the fan not working in one of the bathrooms, but in the grand scheme of things, these issues were really minimal, and the porch it turns out does not need to be completely redone. Eddy helped get it done in the middle of winter when there was snow piling up and parts of the home had to be driven up a steep dirt road. The truth is, he is a pretty incredible person, and having got such a large project accomplished in such inclement weather was amazing.
For the few issues my parents had, he has made every effort to try and make things right. For the moment that I wrote my original report, I over-reacted, and I feel bad that I have stained the reputation of a good man and an incredible home designer that has been running great business for many years. There is a reason why this is the only complaint you will read about Atrium Custom Homes. Since the economy took a huge hit, he probably wasn't able to fix the few issues my parents had with the construction right away, but he has now, and I was wrong- he is not a con man, and has done a remarkable job designing and overseeing the building of a beautiful home. The workers were nice guys, and overall did a really nice job getting such a big project done. They did know what they were doing, and the few mistakes made were relatively minimal given how incredible 99.9% of the house is. I even recently found out that most of that my parent's property use to be a spot for teenage drinking parties, so the workers may have had a few beers after getting a ton of stuff done, but most of it actually had nothing to do with them. Please accept my apology Eddy; for a short period of time things didn't look good, but when all is said and done, I truly appreciate what a great job you did for my parents, so thank you for that.

UPDATE- Eddy is now trying to remedy the situation

I just wanted to update my report by saying that Eddy has now gotten back in touch with my parents to attempt to rectify the situation, and hopefully make good. I can say that he did an incredible job designing the house, so that was never the issue. The issue was with not doing work that was prepaid, and a few problems with the construction, but hopefully he will take care of that now. I will update again when I know the final result, but it's looking hopeful right now. He did have a stellar record with the BBB up until this, so I will trust that he made a mistake and is doing his best to make good on everything now.
