Back in September 2000 I closed my account with my local cable service that I had at that time. AT&T Broadband aka Comcast now. I turned in my two boxes at the local office and when on my way. That same week I had Charter communications install new cable boxes. And everything went well. A month later I get a bill form AT&T billing me for a Cable box. I contacted them and told them I did returned the boxes. When she looked the information up, she found that the person who received it did not make a note. This went on for months. One day I received a call from a supervisor/manager who investigated the case and said we found the box in one of our warehouses. I will have some one clear your account and you will not get any more bills. This is what SUCKS!! I got a bill from a collection company April 18th 2003. Three years later threating to put this bill in my husbands record. When I called and Spoke to a guy named SHAUNA he stated I need to give him the NAME of the person I returned the box to so he can help me. How many people you know that remembers the name and time he spoke to someone 3 years ago? It makes no sense. I had no use for the boxes and I returned them. I never got a call or a bill. And now they want me to pay and with interest. Because of their incompetence I have to pay? I do not think so. They want me to have name, receipt, records of who I spoke to and at what time. I threw all this away. So when I asked for the same from them, their answer is we purge our files every 6 months. SO then WHY do I have to keep a receipt for more that 3 years? They can't hold their records for more than 6 months, they have no records of them billing me or the fact they found it, but yet they want me to pay? All this time they had our name address and phone number and they wait 3 years to bill us. I feel this is fraud and I need someone to help me resolve this ASAP. It's unfair and I do not think for them to be advertising Great Customer Service when they are ripping people off. Alexandra 90650, California

Send in a cease and desist letter

AUTHOR: Ruth - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 30, 2003

You need to send this collection company a "cease and desist" letter, and by law, they have to comply with this and they will have no choice but to turn it back over to AT&T.

Also, you have the right to dispute anything negative on your credit report. You send the letter to the reporting company (ex: Equifax) and let them know that you are disputing the negative item on your report, and it is up to the reporting agency by law, to verify the accuracy of the claim. They have thirty days. If they cannot verify it, they have to take the negative item off your report. Most of the time, the companies do not take the time to fill out the reports that they are sent by the reporting agency, then the item must be taken off.
