I have had ATT Callvantage VOIP service for approximately a year now. Around Dec. 23 I decided to call in and cancel it because I no longer needed it. Upon speaking to a CSR, they eventially persuaded me to keep the service saying they would give me a free month.

Being weary (I did not really even use it), I clarified it with her and explicitly asked what date I had to cancel the service by to avoid the charge. I was told Jan 14th. I also asked how I would get the free month and was told that it would be a credit.

Around Jan 12th I recieved a call from collections inquiring about my past due balance! I explained that I was told it was free. The collections department of course wanted nothing to do with it and transferred me to someone else.

I then got this woman who proceeded to tell me that no it would not be free until Jan 14th! I explained to her that I was told that the month would be free and that the CSR told me that I had until the 14th to cancel to avoid the charge. She insisted and began actually IMPLYING THAT I WAS TRYING TO SCAM THEM.

I got angry and informed her that I wanted to cancel my service a month ago but the other agent offered me the free month, I didn't ask for it at all. She kept going on and on like their was somethign wrong with me. I couldn't believe it. She kept telling me that Jan 14th - Feb 14th would be free, NOT the billing period in which I called around December 23rd.

I finally got upset enough and just told her to cancel my service immediately. The fact is that if I would have known the free month would not be given until Jan 14, I would have cancelled Dec. 23 and recieved a credit back. The representative I first spoke with on Dec. 23rd when I wanted to cancel clearly told me that if I cancelled by Jan 14 I would avoid the charge. She did not say that Jan 14-Feb14 was when I got the free month and that I would be charged for December still.

This is a warning for anyone who is offered the "free month". You might wish to reconsider. In my case I called in December but they were trying to lock me in as a customer until Feb 14th. If I would have known that was the way they did it, I would have cancelled then and recieved a credit for the time period from Dec. 23 - Jan 13 (over half the billing cycle).

I consider it to be misleading and quite rude of the last rep to imply that I was trying to scam them when they were the ones that offered me the free month in the first place! I should have known better than to trust them!
