I accepted a credit card offer with The Universal Card that consisted of: with a balance transfer, I would receive $100.00 of free ATT long distance calls.

I transferred a balance of $7500.00 to the Universal card. I was given an ATT calling card to use for my free $100.00 of calls. Each time I used the card,I was prompted by a voice that stated "You still have free minutes remaining". Under the impression this was true, I continued to use the calling card.

Each time I used the card, it prompted me that there were free minutes remaining. When I received my June 2000 statement, I was shocked to see that yes, I was credited with $100.00 for
my Free calls and had an additional charge of $148.58 in long distance calls! How could I be charged this amount when the phone card prompted me that I had free minutes remaining!

I have been writing letters to customer service,to the president of "The Universal Card" and calling customer service since June of 2000.I have not had any acknowledgementof my letters and the customer service people tell me something different each time I call. But they all end up telling me that I am the only person
who has had this situation and I am repsonsible for the addional $148.58 I am being charged.

I have explained that the calling card had a phone prompt which contined to prompt me with "free minutes remaining". I was
mislead to believe the calls were still free. The customer service department acts like this is not possible and I am an exception to the system.

I now have transferred my balance to another card in order to
close out this card, however, I am still disputing a remaining balance for the calls and finance charges.

I need some help in getting this charge off my card, finance charges reversed and closing this card. I now have a balance of $153.19 which is for the calls plus finance charges. I was mislead and prompted to continue using this card. Some of the calls charged over $4.00 a minute! Please help me get some response and action from the Universal Card.

I am being ignored and can not get any satisfaction. The cusomer service number is 1800-423-4343 and the address is ATT Universal Card, Attn: Billing Disputes, P.O. Box 44183,
Jacksonville, FL 32231-4183

Here is what you need to do to get your money back:

1. First of all in writing submit a letter to the Company and explain to them that you have been misled make sure to include dates, account numbers and that because of this you plan to take action to resolve this by filing complaints with Public Agencies and what you want them to do to avoid this..Give them like a 2 week deadline to straighten it out...then send the letter by Certified Mail (this will be relevant in filing other complaints)

Next

2. Go online and Contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau) you can do this by going to www.bbb.com find the BBB for the state that ATT is in and file a complaint.

Next

3. Go to the website for your State Attorney General or you can get the information by calling your State office ask for the State Attorney General tell them you want to file a complaint..

4. Send copies of all your paperwork with your complaint to the State Attorney General...

5. For Emphasis you may want to send a copy of the Complaint that you filed with the Attorney Generals office to ATT to let them know that you mean business

6. Wait for the results... I guarantee you that even if its not in their policy to dismiss the bill and charges..It will happen...trust me I have had success even with Mega Companies like Microsoft. They don't want the Attorney General looking over their shoulders neither do they want a greivance to show up on their record with the BBB. The BBB report is like a credit report for Businesses....

If you have any questions, please post them below I will respond so eveyone will know.

I have had similar problems with Discover Card. My calls, complaints, outrage, letter writing, speaking to managers, etc. went no where. When I was on the phone with the last manager and he was giving me his brand of why they could do nothing for me I told him they have finally worn me down and I would let a judge figure it out and futher more I would call my state attourney general and anyone else who would listen. I also said I know I'm not the only one and I smell a class action law suite.

You would not believe how fast he changed his posistion and they were giving me everything I had asked. I was connected to someone who this manager had no time to converse with about my situation and he removed late charges, finance charges, and restored my 0% interest rate. All these things were absolutely impossible or so they almost succeeded in making me believe.

The threat of litigation is the only way to get these bully's to listen. They know 99% of the population will just give up and go away without a fight. I hope this helps, Good Luck

Phone Card Ripp-Offs

AUTHOR: Jaime - ()

POSTED: Sunday, March 24, 2002

It is long over due that the corresponding government agency stepped in and resolved this issue. There are sufficient complaints about this type of crime being committed on a daily basis.

There are no phone cards on the market that are fair in maintaining a proper and correct usage of call time. It is a multimillion dollar market and growing rapidly due to the ignorance of the buyer.

The solution would be: a phone apparatus where you would insert the phone card, a reading would appear, providing you with card information with time being used as you are actually using your time bought.

AT&T universal card

This card makes you think you are getting $100 in free phone calls using their card. What you are really getting is ripped off. They don't tell you your minutes are charged at .35 cents per minute. I paid them over $200.00 using their supposedly free phone call card. It is a rip off.

Consumer beware. I wish I had known.
Thank you
