I was employed by The Augusta Chroncle as a newspaper carrier at the South Distribution Center for a few months. The managers there are all incompetent and hate their job, as do the employees. The center cannot keep employees and has a really high turn-over rate.

When I first got there I was told that I would be charged $3 a "missed delivery", which means I either missed the house or someone stole the paper. I thought this was a little high considering that the carriers are already charged for each paper and also because the customers only have to pay $.50- $1.25 a paper, depending on the day. But I thought that once I get used to the route I wouldn't have any misses. Boy, was I ever WRONG!!

I would get charged somewhere around $6-$12 EVERY DAY, even when I completely knew the route and had been there for MONTHS! The houses I got charged for I KNEW for a fact I did not miss. Then I talked to someone that was having the same problem and that person said they contacted law enforcement about having so many papers stolen on their route. The law said The Augusta Chronicle has to meet a quotta as far as misses are concerned, so really the papers where NOT being stolen. So, in short, Augusta Chronicle actually STEALS YOUR MONEY on every paycheck just so they can apparently afford their luxury cars and million-dollar homes!

The amount that the Chronicle pays their carriers is very inferior. I was told that my route would be a certain amount, when indeed it was $200 less than what they told me, and I would only get paid ONCE a month! They did not pay gas, of course, and with the price of gas I probably didn't even make a $100 profit some months!

I also had to "carrier collect" some of my payments from my customers, and usually the ones that I had to collect were the ones who wouldn't pay the office the money, so of course they wouldn't pay me. Then I would get charged to collect MY money!!! They also charged me something for January when I didn't even work there then!! DEPLORABLE!!

I would cancel some of my subscribers for non-payment, most of which had not paid me in 2 or 3 months, and the Chronicle would subscribe these vermin back again!! It was a never-ending cycle, and if I didn't deliver to the people whom they started back up, I would be charged $3 a day!! AND THESE PEOPLE OWE ME $39!! RIDICULOUS!!

And if you want to quit, you have to put in a 30-DAY NOTICE!! If you miss that notice by ONE DAY, you have to stay a whole nother MONTH!! NO EXCEPTIONS!! (that I know of!). Well, certain situations arouse to where I could no longer work there, and I did not give a 30-day notice, just a 2-week. I knew there would be repercussions, but I did not know they would withhold my paycheck for almost a month and take off close to $300, without telling me why!!

Then they are saying that I will have to pay them for the month that I didn't even work after they stiffed me of my money. They say it is in the contract, just like they say EVERYTHING is in the contract, which I simply do not see, probably because the terms used seem to not be English, but I have a little experience in reading contracts, and I DO NOT SEE THIS IN THERE! Nothing says I should pay them for the month I did not work and NOTHING says they reserve the right to take MY MONEY! If it is in there, then they need to learn to put the contract in PLAIN ENGLISH so that laymen can understand it. But of course they will not do so, knowing that people would not understand it and they could get more money that way!!

I feel that 2 weeks is PLENTY of notice to give an employer who you plan to stop working for. It is not my fault that they did not look into finding another carrier before I quit. It is insane how they treat their carriers, which I feel is the backbone of the industry. A lot can be said about a company by the way they treat their employees, and these MONEY-HUNGRY BASTARDS are worthless scum in the bottom of a sewer!

Please DO NOT WORK FOR THE AUGUSTA CHRONICLE! I do not want you to suffer the same fate!
