I brought my Porsche 911 in for repair at Auto Atlanta in Marietta, GA and explained that the coil needed replacing. I asked Sean, the service manager, to call me with an estimate. The next day he said, "there is nothing wrong with the coil and we replaced your fuel pump but it still does not run. We need to take your engine out to determine what the problem is and because we can't reach a bolt on the car."

This would be an additional $3,500. I refused and was angry that he started work on the car without my permission. He held my car ransom so I paid the $550. However, before I left the shop, Sean informed me that the owner ( George Hussey ) offered $3,000 for my car "as is". What a guy ! My 1984 Porsche 911 Carerra has been valued at $20,000. I told the service manager that I thought the low-ball offer was highly unethical under the circumstances.

George collects 914s so I doubt he had any real interest in keeping my car. I towed my car to a real mechanic shop where they replaced the coil, did a tune-up and got my car running in no time. Do not buy parts or take your auto to Auto Atlanta or you will be sorry. I am a member of the Porsche Club of America PCA and told the board members about this incident. I have since learned from others in the Porsche community that they all avoid George and his business. I wish I had spoken to them BEFORE I took my car to these people.

(1) You were not authorized to start work on my car yet you did anyway
(2) You held my car ransom until I paid you $550
(3) I have had a third party estimator value my car at $20,500
(4) 84 911 NADA Original MSRP $33,450 Low retail $20,400    Avg retail $24,600    High retail $33,100
(5) I did not express in interest in selling my car - especially since you were holding it ransom nor did I ask anyone at Automotive Atlanta to appraise my car for a sale.
(6) I was concerned that parts would have been stolen from my car
(7) I quickly learned that Automotive Atlanta was not to be trusted
(8) The 'real' mechanic who repaired my car confirmed that the fuel pump had not been replaced nor had the fuel filter been replaced. So, I paid $550 for nothing.
(9) I have all the service records for this car since 1984-it has been well maintained and always garaged
(10) Several members of the Porsche Club of America confirmed to AVOID Automotive Atlanta
(11) I spoke to ex-employees of Automotive Atlanta and they also said "stay away from Automotive Atlanta (George Hulsey)". Apparently, their motto is, "we'll cheat you right"

If you own a Porsche and value your car then AVOID Automotive Atlanta. Go to a reputable mechanic and avoid the headaches, hassles and wasted time and money. There is a great Porsche mechanic shop (recommended to me by the Porsche Club and other Porsche Club members) in Kennesaw, GA on Moon Station Rd. They are reputable and have real mechanics. Give them a call.

#1 UPDATE Employee

Vice President Automobile Atlanta

AUTHOR: Sean Buckley - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 22, 2011

When this car was towed to Automobile Atlanta it had several issues preventing it from running. The most obvious issue was the failed fuel pump and corroded electronic connections. Once the fuel pump issue was resolved the car had fuel pressure, but still would not start. With a quick shot of starting fluid the car would start and continue to run using its own fuel. Once the car was shut off it could only be started again with a shot of starting fluid. Once the starting fluid was administered the car would start and run just like a normal car until the engine was turned off again. It would drive fine and produce normal power as if no problem was present.

I informed the owner that one of the reference mark sensors was bad and would need to be replaced to correct the issue. I also told him that the sensor bolt was stripped and was nearly impossible to remove while the engine was in the car. I explained that the sensor could be replaced with the engine in the car, but since he was interested in repairing some of the engines leaks at the same time we should remove the engine. We knew that the sensor was the issue and was much easier to replace with the engine out of the car.

He did not express an interest in having the repairs completed. I assumed that he was not interested in the repairs due to the substantial cost relative to the minimal value of the car. We offered to purchase the car for $3000 and would have paid up to $6000 had the negotiations of continued. I know that once the repairs were completed the car would have retailed for about $12,000. I feel that the car has a relativity low value due to the heavy repaint and a life of poor maintenance. I am very sorry to have offended the car's owner, but it was an honest opening offer for a car in that condition.

The following is an email I sent to the customer explaining our position regarding his anger.

You had three separate issues. First, your fuel pump was locked up and not functioning at all. I applied power directly to it and it blew the breaker on my power probe several times. Second, the fuel pump was not getting any power at all. I assumed that when the pump locked up it blew the fuse (very common). I was wrong. The issue was actually a buildup of corrosion on the DME relay under the drivers seat. I cleaned the relay and it gave the
new pump power. The car still wouldnt start.

The final issue was the initial signal to start the injector pulse was never being generated by the reference mark sensor. You never had any ignition problem at all. No person in our building (some have been here for over 35 years) have ever heard of a 911 coil failing. I have personally repaired literally 1000s of VWs and Porsche cars and have never
replaced a single coil since I was 14. Thats not to say that they cant fail, but your coil was NOT the issue. The coil is a part of the ignition system. I was able to start the car on starting fluid with no problems at all. Once started the car would run just fine. If you had any problem with the coil the car would never run under any circumstances. Finally, I know that the reference sensors CAN be replaced with the engine in the car. I simply didnt want to do it. I explained that and you agreed since you were interested in having some of
the oil leaks repaired.

I am very sorry that you had a bad experience with us Kevin. I am also truly sorry that you still feel like I was dishonest with you. I have dedicated my life to these cars  and it is a serious personal loss to have someone dissatisfied with my services.  I have been
surrounded with these cars literally since I was born and  I still feel that my diagnosis was correct. Im very glad to hear that your car is back on the road and I truly hope you continue to enjoy her.
