I needed a vehicle. Since i do not have good credit, decided to go to Auto Master. They always display a sale on their marquee and i figured that was the best thing to do. I told the salesman i was looking at an Escape at a previous company but need something economical, i drive 60 mi to work. He took me directly to an Explorer. I know i should not have hasted into the decision, i admit that. The situation i was in, i needed to return a borrowed car from a friend who wanted it back; i did not have much money, had to have vehicle for work. I gave Auto Master the 8 references they required (we made up addresses if i did not know them). It was 2 days before payday. He said, "Do you have a checking acct?" "yes" "No problem, you need a car today. I will hold your check until Friday, you have my word"... well, his word was no good... they ran the check that day, hit my bank Thursday.. my bank covered it, but cost me returned chk fee.

That should've been my second sign (the first sign was if i didn't have the money in hand, i shouldn't have even gone shopping!)... I called him about it, all he said was sorry.

Bottom line, i am struggling with the wkly payment of $95 plus a gas hog! Plus having to come up with money for the tags. Auto Master is charging almost 17% interest and definately doubled the price of the vehicle! I just want anyone to beware of these situations and keep your head above water!

You weren't really ripped of by the car dealer

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 22, 2009

It sounds to me like you ripped yourself off. You agreed to purchase a gas hog when you knew you had a 60 mile daily commute. What were they supposed to do, insist that you buy something more economical?

You also agreed to a 17% interest rate (which is actually reasonable at these types of car lots) and a weekly payment of $95. The purchase price you also agreed to. Who is responsible for that?

In the real world, a used car dealer will charge you whatever he can get YOU to agree to (and sign for). That is pretty much a fact of life and doesn't really vary from one car lot to another. That's just what they do. Keep that in mind next time you go to buy a used car. Just because you go to a different place doesn't mean you're going to get a decent deal. If you don't do your homework before you buy, the results will be the same.

Auto-Master is Horrible

AUTHOR: Miranda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 15, 2009

I agree, that Auto-Master was a horrible company (don't know if you noticed, but they're now called "Car Hop"). I have a friend that got a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix and the sticker price for it was over $10,000!!! And that was before taxes and tags!

I went to look at cars there, once. I asked for something that was an automatic, 4 door, in the 7-8 grand price range. I didn't really care about color, or make or model, I just needed something to get me around town. The first thing the guy takes me to was a little 2 door Standard that was priced at 9 grand. I asked him what year it was. He stated it was a '97. Red flag. I looked inside, looked clean enough. Looked around the outside. With the exception of a few minor scuffs on the paint, at first glance, it didn't look too bad. Then, I got down and dirty with looking at it (I'm very meticulous about looking at cars). I was looking at the front bumper, and upon looking closely, it looked like it was being held on by no more than superglue. Getting underneath the car, I saw that it was actually being held on by duct tape.

That's right people, the front bumper wasn't even bolted to the rest of the car. It was being held on by duct tape and super glue. I got up, popped the hood, and there are spark plugs missing. The battery was missing as well. At the point that I popped the hood, the guy comes out and asks if I wanted to take a test drive.

I pointed out that there was no battery and spark plugs missing as well. He said he didn't know anything about that. I asked him how he was planning on taking it for a test drive when there was no battery. He couldn't answer me.

At that point, me and my friend that had come with me started heading back to her car. The guy said, "Hey, let me talk to my manager for you and see what we can do for you." My friend and I looked at each other and shrugged. We both figured what the manager had to say was going to at least be worth a laugh.

The manager came out, and I told him what I noticed with the car. The bumper, the spark plugs, the battery. I asked him also about the price, stating that for a '97, 9 grand was pretty steep. He stated that for the problems with the car, he'd take $200 off the price of the car. I laughed at him right then an there. $200 wouldn't even get me a replacement bumper with the labor to put it on. There was no way I was going to take that offer. My friend and I got in the car and left.

I ended up getting a car through Car Mart, a 2000 Ford Contour, that granted was priced a bit higher than the car was worth, about $1000 more than what the car was worth, but not double the price. And they have been great to work with me ever since. I even went back and got a new car when the transmission died on that one (I'm hard on my cars...it was inevitible).
