I used the Avast free software for one year and then upgraded to the paid $19.99 product.  Last week pop-up asked for manual update of the product, which I did.  Next pop-up asked if I wanted to try their new add-on for Chrome.  I clicked yes and my entire computer locked up.  Did a system restore which did not help, so called Avast for support.  After an hour on the phone with no success, I was told that I needed to have their paid technical support for a cost of $109.  I agreed and gave my credit card number.  Three hours later my computer was back up and running.

Next day I checked my credit card charges online and saw that I had been charged for TWO items of support totalling $239.98.  Sent an email telling them of quantity error.  They responded that they wanted written documentation of the special price of $109 that I had been quoted.  Of course there's no documentation because it was done over the telephone.

Then I tried to track down a phone number for their billing department, which was almost impossible.  Finally decided to call their technical support line again and spoke to a guy who said he could do the refund if I upgraded to their $179 support plan.  I said fine, just refund the $239.  He said it would take 24-48 hours (of course the charge appeared immediately).  It's now 72 hours later and I have a total of $419.97 in Avast charges on my card.

Got another email saying that if I wanted a refund of any kind I would have to provide written documentation.  Again, everything was done over the phone so I have none.

Update #2 to Avast billing errors

AUTHOR: ArtCritic - ()

POSTED: Thursday, October 03, 2013

Well, I got a refund of $119 which is not even one of the amounts charged.  Am still disputing the remaining $300 and spoke to a gentleman named Juan today.  After 10 minutes of sparring he finally agreed to put me through to the billing deparment where I spoke to a woman named Sandra.  She told me that I need to click on a link in their email to me.  Link is described as "you can check the status of or reply to this ticket online".  Well, you can't.  All you see is that there is a ticket.  No way to respond, no live buttons, nothing.  Newest wrinkle is that if you email their ccare@avast.com email address, you now get a responding email saying that you need to go online and submit a new ticket.  The ccare address worked just fine 10 days ago.  I'm guessing that they're blocking just me.  This morning I got an email from their head office in Czechoslavakia telling me that that I should call 866-951-7679 for a refund.  That's the same number that has the dead Option 2 for billing.  Stay tuned.

Update to Original "No Way to Refund" report

AUTHOR: ArtCritic - ()

POSTED: Monday, September 23, 2013

Well, I got a call from Avast (Caller ID shows as 555-5555) from a woman named Suzanne asking me to call regarding my refund complaint.  She asked that I call 1-866-951-7679, Option 2.  Guess what?  When you hit Option 2 you get a recording saying that the only way to respond to billing inquiries is via their web page.  I called 1-866-951-7679 (their support line) and told the service guy that I was trying to return a call from Suzanne in Billing.  He said that I could call 1-800-581-1081 which is their direct line.  Guess what?  After 15 rings you get a recording saying "your party isn't answering" and then it hangs up.
