Today I parked my truck in a grassy field near my house that is a common place to sell used vehicles. 5 other vehicles were also parked there.  A few hours later I received a call from an unknown party who would not identify herself. The woman gave me a street address and told me to go pay a fine of $100.00 in order to be given the name and location of the towing company that had my truck. I immediately proceeded to the office only to wait 2 hours for them to process my payment and reveal the "secret" address of the tow company. I was then told that the tow company had a time limit until they started charging me storage fees. Guess what the time limit was? Yep, two hours. When I asked them why it took exactly two hours to process a credit card, they looked away in silence. After the two hour limit had passed, magically they fixed the credit card machine and told me "God bless you" over and over when I complained and asked questions.

When I was given the secret address and phone number of where my vehicle was being held, the young woman who answered the phone explained that the charge would be 255 dollars for the tow and mileage. I asked her if she could speak to the boss and try and reduce the fees as I am a single mother of two and was selling the vehicle to make money to pay rent for this month as I was unemployed. She said she would "talk to her boss" and call me back.  No call back.

When I arrived at the tow location, the man behind the desk Bruce White said he had never heard of anyone speaking to the boss, and they don't reduce fines. I was forced to pay the 265 dollar fine, or they would keep my vehicle and charge me for storage. If you don't claim your vehicle, they will sell it for a profit. I called the number of the original woman I spoke to, and the Boss "Ms. Preston" answered. As she was slurring her words I'm certain she was either intoxicated, or had suffered a stroke, but as I looked up her picture online, I'm quite sure she has not had a stroke, either way she was incoherent, unprofessional and downright rude. She re-stated in a slur that there were no reduction in fees.

At this point I had no choice, but to pay the ransom to release my vehicle. Upon walking out to the yard full of vehicles, I noticed my truck and saw that the door was unlocked. Which was odd, as I had locked it upon leaving it. That's when I opened the door and noticed broken glass everywhere. I immediately panicked and told my two kids to get away from the glass. I went back inside to find the man who had taken my money, Bruce White. He said that he was aware that the window was broken and that his driver had done it. I started to get upset and asked why on earth they would break out my window. At that point he said that it is hard to tow a car or truck that has an emergency brake on, and that was the reason they broke the window.  Then he said that sometimes they break it because they can't find a VIN number and the vehicle may be stolen. Stolen? A theif is going to post a FOR SALE sign with their telephone number on a stolen vehicle? Makes no sense. He just shrugged, and kept telling me to call the owner. At that point I became hysterical and started crying. Not only did they just rob me of 255 dollars, they also vandalized my vehicle on purpose and refused to do anything about it. I aksed Bruce Whiteif this was common practice at Babbsco and he said yes.

When I went back in the office to call the police, another man who had his car towed from the same location came in and said his windsheild had been smashed in. He demanded an answer as well, to which Bruce White just shrugged his shoulders, and mumbled something about a rock.

I then called Beth Preston again pleading for her to help, but should have known better. She took ZERO accounability and told me to call FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) The number she gave me is a fast and steady busy signal. No name, just call FHP. Unbeliveable. By far one of the biggest RIP OFF's I have seen to date in Florida.

The two men in front of me said the car towing racket has been going on for some time with Babbsco Towing, the DMV, and Florida Highway Patrol.  They are all in cahoots. Be careful if you park your vehicle on the street with a for sale sign in it, Babbsco will unlawfully tow you, vandalize your vehicle, then force you to pay them, or they will steal your vehicle and sell it. Outright robbery and bad business! Beware of this SCAM, and steer clear of a company that takes advantage of unemployed people and minorities!

Thanks for the inaccurate yet articulate reply

I'm amazed at the articulate rebuttal to my original repost. As it took some time for a reply I am sure this could not have possibly been composed by the owner or any employee at BABBSCO Towing.

To whomever wrote back, thank you for following through only after a complaint was filed for everyone to see on the worled wide web. It's not surprising that an unfactual, albeit well composed reply was submitted on BABBSCO'S behalf. But clearly you left out key and damaging facts as to only save face and make it appear that BABBSCO is a legitimate business. As with google searches there are strength in numbers and multiple reports and although I an certainly not the first to write about your unethical company, my hope in submitting a Rip Off Report is that others will see it, and follow suit. As now the word is out about your criminal ways, and sub standard customer service.

As the internet gives minorities like myself a voice, in addition to my recent unemployment, and ample time on my hands, I'm anticipating a long and arduous tit for tat on this forum. It's a shame you couldn't do business the right way the first time and outright robbed me. But as you said you've been starling from folks in one of the most lawless states in America since 197 something? Try doing business like yours in any state on the West Coast and you'd see that your 30 year thievery would have been long ended.

The internet is a powerful tool for the little person. Thank god for this platform. Karma and internet reviews will be your ultimate and long overdue demise.

Truth about Curbstone Tow

AUTHOR: BABBSCO Towing - ()

POSTED: Friday, September 27, 2013

This is in response to “Tifany L’s” complaint. We were called by the Florida Highway Patrol on 9/13/2013 to tow four vehicles that were parked illegally according to F.S. 316.1951. All four of these vehicle owners were issued a curbstone citation from Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that they had to pay prior to picking up their vehicle from our impound lot. We researched “Tifany L’s” complaint and found that the vehicle in this complaint was owned and picked up by Heidi L F****. Ms. F**** is using a fictitious name to make a complaint about our company.

At the time the truck was towed, the officer on scene was unable to read the VIN (vehicle identification number) because it was covered with a for sale sign. Florida Highway Patrol called us after the truck had towed to our impound lot and instructed us to use any and all means necessary in order to get the VIN (i.e. breaking a window or door latch if   attempt to unlock the vehicle. The attempt to unlock the vehicle was unsuccessful and the vent window was then broken to gain access to the vehicle in order to provide the VIN to Florida Highway Patrol. Again, the window was broken after the vehicle was towed to our impound lot, not for the purpose of making the truck easier to tow as she stated in her complaint.

As for the “unknown party” that contacted Ms. F**** about her illegally parked truck, this person was the impounding officer for Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (not BABBSCO Towing). They called her to inform her that she was required to pay fine for illegally parking her vehicle before she could come and obtain said vehicle from our lot. At no time was there a “secret location” involved in dealing with this customer.

Ms. F**** called our office to ask about her truck. She was told the price and the address where her vehicle was located. Ms. F**** was not charged any storage fees by BABBSCO Towing. Ms. F**** arrived with her children at our impound lot and wanted to speak to the owner of the company regarding the bill. She did and it was explained to her that bills are not reduced when they are requested from a law enforcement agency.

It was also explained to Ms. F**** that we attempted to unlock her vehicle to get access to the VIN. No one stated that the window was broken into in order to release the emergency brake. Ms. F**** became upset and started to scream and yell, and continued to scream and yell while she was with her children. Prior to leaving our impound lot in her truck, she threw a car seat, a car part, garbage, and papers all over the impound lot before driving away. All of which we have on our surveillance system.

Ms. F**** also claims that another vehicle had a smashed in windshield. The windshield on this vehicle was cracked, not smashed, before BABBSCO Towing ever came into contact with it. This was clearly noted on the inventory and towing record for that vehicle by DMS. Ms. F**** also added that other customers stated that this type of “racket” has been going on for some time. It should be noted that the other customer in question that Ms. F**** refers to is a licensed automobile dealer in the State of Florida and he is well aware of the laws regarding the illegal parking of vehicles for the purpose of selling them on private or public property.

We are not Florida Highway Patrol’s exclusive towing company. We tow for them on a rotating basis with numerous other towing companies in Palm Beach County. While we understand that Ms. F**** is upset about her vehicle being towed, she did violate the law by parking her vehicle on the side of the road for sale. By writing this distorted review of our company, Ms. F**** is simply displacing her anger for facing the consequences of illegally parking her vehicle in an attempt to sell it.

Furthermore, she even went the extra mile as to try to discredit our company by stating our company’s owner was slurring her words and was incoherent. This accusation does not even merit a response. Ms. F**** apparently accessed our web page to acquire the FULL names of the gentlemen who were assisting her that day, as to further credit her rage and discontentment of paying her fine and tow bill. These accusations are not only a false account of the incident in question, but seem to be the rants of a woman looking to be a victim in a common situation with curbstone tows.

We have been in business since 1978 and are proud of our impeccable reputation. We do our utmost to educate our customers in situations, like this one, where they simple didn’t understand or know the law. Our company has never towed a person’s vehicle illegally. Had we participated in such a heinous act, we can assure you that we would not have been towing for local law enforcement agencies for over 35 years.

Ms. F**** also claimed that BABBSCO Towing would then steal your vehicle and sell it. We can only assume that this accusation comes from the anti-dumping laws which are posted in our office, as per F.S. 713.789 (READS – the owner of any vehicle, vessel, trailer or motor home that is towed per instructions from any public agency are responsible for the charges for the services performed.  When the charges have not been paid, the towing company performing this service has a right to apply for a certificate of destruction and issue a wrecker operator lien after 35 days. Failure to pay the towing and storage charges will have consequences.  The vehicle owner will be unable to register another vehicle or renew their tag in the state of FL until the lien is satisfied.)

Finally, we do not target or take advantage of unemployed people or “minorities” as Ms. F**** stated, the owner of BABBSCO Towing is a woman in a predominately male industry, and there for is considered a minority business. She is also a single mother who has raised two children on her own, to say she targets and takes advantage of such groups is shameful to say the least. This rebuttal is not meant to discredit her feelings, only to set the record straight on her misconstrued views of BABBSCO Towing.
