Baltimore Gas & Electric Baltimore Gas & Electric...bge.com - BGE sent me a bill for over $2,000 including late charges, and told me they forgot to bill me for several months. I asked how could that be, that I had been paying monthly. They said they installed a new meter several months ago and forgot to notify/bill us. Baltimore Maryland

I received a bill from BGE last month for over $2,000 + late charges. I called BGE to find out what was happening with my bill, how it could be that much in one month. They said they forgot to bill us. So I gave the bill to the Landlord to contact BGE.
The Landlord called BGE and requested an itemized bill and asked if there was something wrong with the meter. BGE said they had installed a new meter several months ago and just forgot to notify us and forgot to bill us. Landlord, to date has never received an itemization of these charges.
BGE set up a payment plan of just under $200 per month in addition to the outrageous $400+ monthly bill we are receiving for a 900 square foot space, and waived the late fees.
I received one of the two BGE bills today and reviewed the Electrical Usage Profile:
September 2012, 30 days, 133 kWh
Septemeber 2013, 33 days, 720 kWh
How can it be possible that in such a small space, we would be using 7X the amount of electric in a month? BGE has no response and is obviously not willing to look into this matter.

A few things....

First of all a Utility Bill is something you get EVERY month. So the "forgot" to bill us really doesn't hold any weight, unless you truly thought that they were giving you free electricity you(or your landlord) should have been on the phone with them finding out why you haven't gotten a bill.
Next, just based on the two numbers you gave it sure does sound like you had a meter issue. But not with the new meter. It is very hard to believe that in the middle of the summer you used 133KwH or just over 4KwH/day. Even a fairly new refrigerator will take up about 1/3 of that amount per day. Not including things such as your TV, Lights, Computers, or anything else that uses electricity. Then if you even minimally use A/C that number is actualy impossible to acheive. The 720KwH in the month is actually a bit more reasonable to what you would expect.
By the way..just so you get your math right..it isn't 7 times more useage. In 2012 you had 4.43/KwH used per day, in 2013 you used 21.81KwH/Day. That is actually just under 5 times as much(4.92 to be more exact).
Of course if you still have doubts. Unplug and turn off EVERYTHING in your house. Is your meter still moving? If so then you MAY have an issue. If not...plug in/turn on one thing at a time to see how much of a jump it makes. As another test you can also pick up a meter at your local hardware store that will tell you exactly how much electricty each appliance is using...I bet you will be shocked at the results.
