I have two male chihuahua, both 7 years old, Jake and Rex. I have always taken to Banfield for their yearly shots and exam. On Oct 22, 2005, my husband took Jake for his yearly shot and exam. the vet diagnosed with a heart, so murmur and prescribed MRX RC canine Early Cardiac. My husband brought Jake home and informed me of the vet's visit. So we gave Jake the food as prescribed by the vet (Dr. Cockburn), 1 1/3 cup a day. I never have seen in signs or symptoms in either of boys. Both were full of life, joy and love. On Nov 19. 2005, my daughter brought down with saying he had problems breathing then came Jake to my husband and then had a stroke or seizure and had severe diarhea, my daughter was crying, screaming about Jake. We were all coming unglued, so I tried calling Banfield but they don't open til 10 a.m. So my husband gave Jake CPR and we all getting very frantic. So before 10 a.m. my husband and daughter took Jake to the vet, then my husband called later that to say they were going keep Jake to observe him. Later in day Banfield, for to us pick up jake and take him to their hospital, which in Lawrenceville. So the vet at the hosp they equipment their to take care of Jake. My husband and daughter visited Jake later that evening, appeared to alright, but vet said his temp was low and keep, and called if any changes. On Nov 20, 2005, the vet called us about Jake, he had died that morning, my husband and I were both in tears. My daughter came down, my husband told her about Jake. It too unbelievable, unbearable. We didn't understand how young vibrant boy, could go from well to dead so quickly. It taken us months to move on with Jake's death. His brother, Rex, is wondering where his partner-in-crime was.

On Feb 9,2006, Hq Banfield called us about the dog food that Jake was prescribed. They told my husband and me that the food was tainted and being recalled. I briefly talked to the lady and told her Jake had died in Nov 05. I was telling her all about Jake, how lively and love he was. Then she gave to phone number to Royal Canin and she told me tell what I had say about Jake. well, I called Royal Canin on Feb 13, 2006 and they denied anything wrong with the food. I told them it funny Rex didn't eat this food and very much alive. But this family stressed, confused and can't believe how Banfield and Royal Canin have treated. So we want some justice for this manner.

Medical explanation for what happened

AUTHOR: Dailyalice - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 02, 2009

The symptoms you describe for your pet (trouble breathing, stroke) are not usually what is seen with melamine poisoning.

They are seen with heart failure. Diarrhea can occur when an animal is under a lot of stress, as when he is having a lot of trouble breathing.

Your veterinarian detected heart disease and prescribed an appropriate diet. Sometimes, sadly, heart disease can suddenly progress rapidly and lead to death despite efforts to help the pet. It is very hard to deal with the shock of losing a pet suddenly when they seemed fine just a few weeks before.

TWO SEPARATE COMPANIES!!!!!!

I am sorry for your loss, but you have your "ripoff" facts wrong.

Let me ask you a question:

Would you get mad at Wal-Mart if the Tropicana Orange Juice you bought made you sick?!? NO! You go after TROPICANA!!! It's not Wal-Mart's fault for stocking it, they assume that Tropicana wouldn't send them tainted product!!!

That food is MANUFACTURED by Royal Canin, Royal Canin is sold IN PetSmart, and PRESCRIBED by Banfield.

Banfield has NOTHING to do with the content of said food and your chief complaint should be with ROYAL CANIN, NOT BANFIELD. Banfield recommends Royal Canin (previously Waltham), which is a very high-quality food and they would not recommend such a product if they did not believe in it. All they did was PRESCRIBE the food, they did not make it, order it, stock it, OR sell it. PETSMART is responsible for the selling of that food....so stop attacking the hospital.

There is no way for the Banfield staff to have known that the content of the food was "tainted." They trust that the food companies are sending out quality product, and were just trying to help your dog. Banfield did NOTHING wrong here and your report should be filed under Royal Canin OR PetSmart!!!!! NOT Banfield!!!!!!
