These are not factory direct stores as they advertise. They are selling furniture made in China at custom made prices. How does the FTC let them get away with this. I think it's time that they be exposed. This John Elway computer armoire makes me sick every time I look at it. Scars they tried to cover up,can't lock the file drawer. Not painted properly, nicks, screws missing, screws broke off in door hinge not connected, corner magnet missing. Screws on hinges scaring furniture. Pull out light hooked up wrong when made. Paint peeling off like finger nail polish.
It's a complete ripoff. I think you get the picture. I,m sick, bout to stroke out. Only God knows how much we can bear!

Nope, never worked for a furniture retailer, importer or manufacturer
AUTHOR: Randall - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, April 02, 2007
Sorry, Jacob, but I've never been employed by a furniture retailer, importer or manufacturer nor do I own stock in any furniture company, domestic or otherwise.
But I do live in North Carolina, where the bulk of furniture sold in this country used to be made. I'm surrounded by people who lost their jobs when American companies had to go overseas to source their furniture because all the American consumer wanted was cheap prices.
My neighbors and friends know all about furniture quality. I've done my homework, learning what to look for and what to avoid.
Instead of attacking me, why don't you tell us where and when you bought the furniture that you say is so awful and why you accepted the furniture? And why you haven't used your warranty to have the piece repaired/replaced?

Employee of the company?

There are a lot of wierd things about this site but by far the strangest thing is that anytime anyone, on any topic disagrees with a report or talks about another side of the problem, they are IMMEDIATELY accused of working for 'the company'. whichever that one happens to be in that particular report.
Other than this comment, I have only ever responded extremely rarely because I got accused of working for some company.
Then the original report goes wandering off into name calling responses for literally years sometimes.
Ridiculous.

House full of Bassett furniture

Randall, are you the one that work at the Bassett factory in Newton, North Carolina and own stock in the company? I'll find out. You talk like a company man. How much did that MBA get you in bonuses for ripping people off.I have a way of finding out. Bosses always get the best of every thing. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have a Bassett suv in your driveway.

Yes, I do own Bassett Furniture
AUTHOR: Randall - (U.S.A.)

As I sit here at my Bassett computer desk, I can look into my living room which has the following Bassett products in it: a sofa, three bookcases, an entertainment center, two upholstered chairs with matching ottomans, a coffee table, a display unit and two straight back chairs. I bought every piece -- not one was a gift.
Yes, I do own Bassett products. If you bought a piece of Bassett that cost more than your vehicle, that's your choice.
Since you want to know where I went to school, I earned my bachelor's degree at Michigan and my MBA was earned at Indiana University. My post graduate study was at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
My common sense comes from my parents, who taught me to do my homework before buying and not to accept anything of poor quality. They also taught me that just because a product has a fancy name on it, it doesn't mean the product is worth more.
Perhaps the difference in the quality of my Bassett furniture and yours is that I did what I said in an earlier reponse: I only bought what was produced in the USA, I inspected it before accepting delivery and I bought the warranty. All of my furniture was purchased in the last four years and I've never had to use the warranty.
If you have a Bassett product that's of poor quality, why did you accept it? Why haven't you gotten it repaired under your warranty?
As for the name of the collection, all that means is that they paid someone to put their name on it. If it was called Louis XIV, would you think it was built by French royalty?

Bassett Furniture costs more than my Nissan Pathfinder

Where did this cheap furniture bit come from? You haven't bought any Bassett furniture. Your furniture must have been a gift. This piece of furniture cost more than my Nissan Pathfinder. Don't talk on something ,if you haven't bought it. If you sold it to me. See you in court. Should have called police, like I started to. This is not cheap furniture! John Elway collection, John Elway collection, What school did you go to.

Consumers want low prices -- that means China-made
AUTHOR: Randall - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, March 29, 2007
Thanks to consumers constantly wanting low-priced (cheap) furniture, American manufacturers/importers have increasingly turned to Asia, most likely China, as the source of products. So the furniture you bought was probably made by Bassett -- at one of their plants in Asia.
If you want well-made furniture that lasts, don't look for the lowest price -- look for quality and ASK where your furniture is produced.
You get what you pay for. Nowadays people want to buy a room full of furniture for what their parents paid for one sofa. You buy cheap, you get cheap. Your entertainment center would probably have cost twice as much if it had been manufactured in the U.S.
For the record, I've never been employed by Bassett or any other furniture retailer. But I have bought a lot of furniture at Bassett and have had great results.
My secrets: 1) Only buy furniture that is produced in the U.S., even if it costs more. It's well worth it. 2) Inspect the furniture when it's brought into your home. If it's not right, don't accept it. 3) If you buy cheap, make sure you also buy the warranty. You'll need it.
Why did you accept the furniture if it was damaged? Whatever, you should contact then under your warranty. You did buy the warranty, didn't you?

Another possibility: You bought an FPQ [First Piece Qualification]
AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, March 29, 2007
Did you buy a 'factory overrun', a 'blem' or a 'factory second' or similarly euphemistically-labeled item...???
Whenever a new design is introduced and/or a new vendor is signed to produce something, the company for whom the items are made will require FPQ which is a first 'run' [and the 'run' may total 5 pieces, or many pieces, depending on cost, complexity, etc.] The shoddiness you describe suggests that you bought an FPQ unit.
Gibson bought Epiphone several years ago, and subsequently decided to reintroduce the very nice Epiphone Masterbilt solid wood guitars. These new Masterbilts were sourced from China while the original Masterbilts had been made in the USA.
Hence many FPQ guitars were made in China and then evaluated by Gibson/Epiphone employees in the USA until the Chinese "got it right". The "earlier" FPQ guitars tended to be pretty bad. Rather that scrap all of those FPQ guitars, they were sold off cheap to dealers who then resold them on ebay as 'factory seconds' or 'blems'. Some were bad while others matched the 'first quality, factory-warranted' Masterbilts. But you never could know what you would get. I bought a 'first quality, factory-warranted' Masterbilt for $26 more than the ebay 'blem' Masterbilts were usually delivered for.

Maybe it was made in Usa, China?
AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

"Custom" and "Factory Direct" do not really mean much. All retail stores are essentially "Factory Outlets" as they provide the point of sale (outlet) of a factory's output to the ultimate consumers.
The country of origin is a required disclosure in the USA. This dates back to the 1950's and was a way to protect USA goods from cheap Japanese imports.
In the 1950's goods made in Japan were (correctly) perceived as usually being almost-trash so one city in Japan changed its name to Usa, Japan. Then their goods were marked "Made in usa".
In the UK, retail goods are NOT marked with their country of origin...
