My partner and I contacted Dale Denney (Bearpaw Outfitters) in June, 2002 about a muzzleloader mule deer trophy hunt.

His web site indicated and he stated by telephone they had a lot of trophy mule deer in southeast Idaho . He seemed like an honest enough guy so we booked a hunt with him at a total cost $3,043.00, not including traveling expenses.

Our hunt was to include private land hunting, drop camp, all meals, a cook, an in camp guide and a verbal guarantee that we would see trophy class mule deer.

After traveling 2600 miles one way from Texas we found out we were to stay in what appeared to be his mother's house which was located in a subdivision.

We had to remove shoes and muddy clothes before entering the house, but Mr. Denney claimed it was his new hunting lodge. Also upon arrival we saw a doe and a spike hanging in the garage.

We later found out that there was NO private land to hunt on, it was all public land! There was no in camp guide! An much to our surprise, we were the only paying hunters, Mr. Denney had some friends and relatives that were there to hunt as well. Our only clue as to where to go to hunt was to wait until his friends and relatives left out in the morning and then try to follow them.

After a few days of hunting and talking to the local residents, we discovered that there had been NO trophy mule deer in southeast Idaho since 1992.

A hard winter in 1992 and in 1996 severely impacted the mule deer population. Again, the Bearpaw website and Mr. Denney assured us that trophy mule deer were currently abundant in the area. We also talked to a game warden that informed us that the State issued 2000 mule deer licenses in the southeast area alone in the 2002 season because the doe and spike population was so large they were trying cull the herd and rid the area of them.

Mr. Denney arrived a couple of days after we did with lumber and supplies to repair his mothers house and spend the majority of his time doing just that.

It was our understanding that Mr. Denney was to be our in-camp guide and did manage to draw us a map on the back of a matchbook cover in an effort to show us where to go hunt.

It was evident that we were taken advantage of and misled by Mr. Denney, all of his promises and offerings turned out to be false. We could have better spent $3,043.00 by just staying home.

Rebuttal to BearPaw Outfitters

AUTHOR: Jeff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 04, 2006

I have hunted with Dale Denney and BearPaw Outfitters on three seperate occassions. Two of these hunts were mule deer hunts in Utah, and the other was a turkey hunt in Washington.

I found Dale Denney, and his entire staff, to be honest, cordial, professional, and knowledgable about the respective hunting areas. I had a great time on all three of these hunts. I harvested game on all three of these hunts. I hope to hunt with Dale and BearPaw Outfitters again in the future.

I grew up in southeast Idaho and know from personal experience about the quality of the mule deer in this area. The area holds tremendous trophy potential.

I consider Dale Denney, and others I have met at his camps to be friends of mine.

Sincerely,
J.

The verifiable truth!!! ..We do not guarantee success on wild hunts.

AUTHOR: Dale Denney - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 18, 2003

At Bearpaw Outfitters we take hunters hunting for free ranging wild animals. We do not guarantee success on wild hunts. We do book some guaranteed hunts on high fenced game farm ranches for hunters wanting a guaranteed hunt. These guaranteed hunts are not for free ranging wild animals, they are for game farm animals, so we are able to guarantee a kill there. On a wild hunt where there are many variables out of our control, so we can not guarantee those hunts, and other outfitters do not guarantee wild hunts either. Most hunters understand if they do not happen to be successful on a wild hunt, because it is hunting, not like shooting on a game farm.

Mr. Anderson and his friend booked an UNGUIDED wild mule deer hunt for $1100 each. They also had to buy Idaho hunting licenses and pay Idaho sales tax, but Bearpaw Outfitters only received $1100 each. This is a very low priced affordable hunt, and is a real value in comparison to what some outfitters charge.

Unfortunately Ron Anderson can not accept his own inability to find deer on his own. He probably should have booked a guided hunt. Furthermore, he makes numerous accusations which are only heresay and are completely untruthful. He actually forgets exact specifics and creates his own version of the story. I can prove this, and I invite the host of Rip-Off Report to contact me and I will provide all the proof noted herein.

First of all Mr Anderson states he contacted me in June 2002. That is false, I have the email message from him contacting me in January 2002 and the photocopy of the check to book the hunt dated May 20, 2002. He took 3 1/2 months to think about booking a hunt with us. I suspect he confused things other outfitters may have said. My point here is to show how Mr. Anderson forgets exactly what really happens.

On the hunt application which Mr. Anderson received and signed, it clearly states: I have read, fully understand, and agree to: All twenty six (26) "Terms And Conditions" of Bearpaw Outfitters; and to the details provided on this
"Hunt Application". Ron Anderson signed on the line right under this statement, indicating he had read, understood, and agreed to our terms and conditions.

We have these terms specifically spelled out so that every hunter who books a hunt with Bearpaw Outfitters, knows how we operate our business.

At no place on the paperwork does it state that hunters will be hunting only private ground.
At no place on the paperwork do I guarantee success or size. In fact Terms & Conditions #26 specifically states we obviously cant guarantee your success or guarantee what size animals will be taken. I did tell Mr. Anderson verbally we had some private ground available to hunt, but we hunt more public lands than private. Anyone doubting this can make an anonymous call and verify this by asking me about the hunts.

Mr. Anderson booked an unguided hunt. In the Terms & Conditions it specifically states that your trip includes our advice on where to hunt and our directions where to hunt. I made myself available every evening or morning before the next days hunt. There were maps in the house on which I personally showed Mr. Anderson my recommendations of the best areas to hunt based on recent hunts, past years hunts, and deer sightings during the current season.

We had hunted the private property several times from September to mid November just before Mr. Anderson's arrival, there were just not many animals in that area during the 2002 season. Each time hunters hunted that area, they only hunted it once, because the deer were sparse. We told that to Mr. Anderson and suggested he hunt other areas where we had seen more deer. He agreed.

Because we had several storms with heavy snow just prior to his arrival, I spoke to him by phone in his truck and asked him if he would like to stay at our new lodge near Preston which we had just purchased, he said yes. I told him I had a camp in an area where we had been seeing the most deer but it was getting uncomfortable with the snow we were getting, and that the newly purchased lodge would be more comfortable. I told him it was not yet furnished and that we would be using camp cots and camp cooking gear, but it would be much warmer. He said it sounded good and agreed to meet us there. I even offered for him to stay one night early, the day before his scheduled hunt began, and to stay an extra night after his hunt ended at no extra charge, but he chose not to.

After his arrival, I told him we had other previous hunters who had hunted the private property and they did not see much game on the property and that we were seeing more game in other areas which I recommended as being the best areas to hunt. He in turn, decided to hunt these other areas and did not choose to hunt the private. That was his choice, but the private was available to hunt had he chose to hunt it.

I showed him and the other unguided hunters in camp, on the map in my lodge, areas I recommended to hunt. I told them all about several hunting areas and sightings of deer in these areas. He had equal opportunities as the other hunters. If he had needed to take the maps with him, he could have, because no one else needed to take them. When asked if he understood where to go, he said he did. On occasion he even followed the other hunters to the hunt areas.

I had 12 total Muzzleloader hunters in 2003. 4 from Texas, 4 from Oregon, 4 from Washington. Of the twelve hunters, ten had sightings of branch antlered bucks, five had shots at what they considered trophy class bucks (23 to 30 bucks), two saw the biggest bucks they have ever seen in any state, eight said they plan on returning again for another in Idaho in the future. That sounds like a pretty good hunt to me!

The 2001 hunting season was the best in many years. During the spring of 2002 we had a bad storm which was hard on deer numbers. At first it was determined by Fish & Game that only young deer were impacted. Since young deer are not the primary target of Bearpaw Outfitters hunters, we were not worried about the 2002 hunt. It was not until after the season had already started in the fall of 2002 that it was determined by Fish & Game that some older segments of the population were also affected by the storm. I have and can provide these press releases by Fish and Game.

Despite lower numbers of deer Bearpaw Outfitters still experienced a fair hunting season. During the course of the season several of our hunters contacted us by phone to see how it was going, I told them numbers were lower but by hunting hard and being in the right areas we were still experiencing a fairly good season. Numerous good bucks were sighted in 2002, several good bucks were killed, and several hunters from 2002 are planning return hunts to Idaho with Bearpaw Outfitters.

The other hunters in camp during Mr. Anderson's hunt told me they met him one day and he was sitting on his 4-wheeler smoking a cigarette and drinking coffee. After complaining about seeing only one deer, the other hunters got their binoculars out and say they showed him about 20 to 30 deer visible from where he was sitting. In their opinion he should have been on a guided hunt, because he could not spot deer. Obviously I cant be responsible if he can only spot 1 out of 20 to 30 deer, and he booked an unguided hunt. And yes the other hunters are willing to put that in writing. I have spoken to my Oregon hunters who were in camp on the hunt previous to him, who are also willing to verify that their hunt was a good hunt and that they saw multiple bucks. If desired, I will ask them for a written statement.

One day during the hunt, I received a call from his hunting partner Ken. He said they got up to the hunting area and he had forgot his gun. He asked if I would bring it out to him. I told him I would be glad to if he would meet me halfway so I was not late for an appointment. He said he would just come back and get it at lunch. At the end of the day it turns out he sat in the truck all day with no gun and didnt even go hunting. That reduced his chances of success by 1/6th by not hunting at all that day. Another time he told me about sitting in the truck half the day, because his knee was bothering him.

On another occasion near the end of the hunt Mr. Anderson complained to me about not seeing any large trophy deer. I told him about an extremely large buck hanging out in a nearby drainage. His reply was that his partners knee was bothering him and he couldnt go after that deer, so neither of them hunted that buck. Obviously that is not my responsibility either.

He claims everyone he has spoken to, including Fish & Wildlife personnel say there are no trophy bucks in SE Idaho. The truth is that although the population of older bucks is not what it once was, there are still trophy bucks killed in this area every year, and anyone with knowledge of the area knows this. Just contact Idaho Fish & Game and ask about the genetics here. Or take a look at the Boone & Crockett Record Book.

In Summary, everything promised was available to Mr. Anderson on his trip. We actually offered him more lodging and meals than promised. His ability to find game is not my responsibility, and he probably should have been on a guided hunt since he couldn't spot deer. But it was his choice to book the unguided hunt.

I offer many of my hunters return trips free or at a discount if I feel their trip could have been better than what they received, but this is not the case with his hunt.

He has called and knowingly interrupted my other hunts later in the season. He constantly calls me a liar, I have caught him on several untruthful statements, and he treated every one else in camp poorly while in Idaho, so I am not interested in giving him any return trip or having him back as a client at all.

I am tired of him calling me up and saying What are you going to do for me. I am not going away. I will cause you to lose your outfitting license. among many other statements he has made. This is an evil person, but I will not be intimidated or blackmailed.

Contrary to his accusations I am the purchaser of our lodge from a local realtor, it is located 3 miles south of Preston Idaho on about 3 acres, which is quite central in my large hunting area. Mud is very sticky in the area and we all take our shoes off at the entry in the attached garage before entering. I can't imagine wearing muddy shoes inside on the carpet and hardwood floors.

The two meat deer were hanging when Mr. Anderson arrived. The two hunters shot them for meat late in the hunt. They had seen larger deer during the hunt and shot at larger deer but failed to get them. Those hunters are probably willing to verify that if desired.

I have numerous friends who hunt with me every year, as required by Idaho law, they pay to hunt with me, and all sales tax and forest use fees are also paid for them to hunt. I can provide the records to prove this.

Several of my guides started out as clients, they hunted with us many times and finally became good enough hunters to guide for me. They are also now my friends and I am proud of that, and can prove that with past client records and current guide licenses.

I can clearly see the need for the Rip-off Report, but I only hope that the people who run it, will verify that all complaints are valid. You have my complete coperation in verifying all information I have provided herein.

Respectfully,

Bearpaw Outfitters
