Selected Berger/Allied because they had Company offices in both Atlanta (moving from) and Austin (moving to). Bought expensive replacement cost insurance. Move was almost a full truck, 250 boxes and furniture. Company backed almost all of the boxes including all of the valuables. We packed books and office material.
Unl;oaded in Austin last week in June 2010. All boxes and furniture accounted for. Opened all but 25 boxes first week in July and then went to SC for the summer. Returned to Austin middle of Septemeber and opened remaining boxes. A very expensive Bang & Olufsen cordless phone was missing. Filed a claim and it was denied twice. The reason is that we signed for al of the boxes and did not note an exception at the time.
I explained that I did not inventory the contents of each box when they were packed and the driver would not want to wait around for a week while we unpacked all of the boxes. They responded by saying we must have "accidently thrown the phone away with the packing paper since all boxes were accounted for." Since Austin is a "green" city, all boxes had to be flattened and all packing paper had to be folded and tied in bundles for removal. My wife and I unpacked everything ourselves and flattened everything. My response to Allied, it was never packed in Atlanta.
They denied the claim under appeal because "...cannot determine that the phone was lost while in our posession".
It is simply my word against theirs despite buying an expensive insurance policy.
DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE, unless you inspect and inventory everything going into boxes and do not sign the drivers report until you unpack and re-inventory every item in every box if you do not want to get RIPPED OFF!

Thanks for the response. I first went to Berger in Atlanta, who are in 12 cities and is Allied's largest agent. They directed me to file the claim with Allied. I agree that life is short, but the phone is $1000 and Berger talked me into getting "replacement cost insurance" because "it would speed the claim process".
I guess the sad part of this is a) someone took a very expensive phone at the shipping end, b) Allied asumes I am the dishonest one for signing for all of he boxes and then filing a claim and c) that based on their logic buying insurance is a waste of money since no-one could open all of the boxes before signing for them.
As background, my wife and I have moved over 20 times in our lifetime and each time, we were left with loss or damage that is never repaired or replaced. The moving industry has a real problem, not just an image problem.

Who did you file the claim with?

I have worked for an agent of Allied Van Lines in the past (not Berger; in fact our agent wouldn't deal with them either-they owed us money). Generally the agent of the van lines would handle the claim. But you can send your claim directly to Allied. In my experience though, the agent would do more for the customer than Allied would. But that's not to say they wouldn't help you in this case. If you sent your claim to Berger's office and not Allied's office, I would try sending to Allied directly. Go to Allied Van Lines website (http://www.allied.com/claim-form.aspx). Once there you will see where you can fill out a claim online with Allied rather than Berger.
I hope this helps you with your claim. If it was me though, I wouldn't bother filing a claim over a phone. Life is entirely too short to be petty.
Good luck!
