Just another case of the welfare mentality

Gimme Gimme Gimme....
I'm not responsible for my own choices....
I'm not responsible for my own actions, or lack thereof.....
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Computers are so simple.
Pay attention.
Learn how to do a few "basics" on your own...Like update and maintain a good anti-virus program!
Even though the Geek Squad truly sucks and is way overpriced, you still CHOSE to use their services!
Why should they fix YOUR mistake for free?
Why should Best But eat the cost of the computer and/or the repairs?
The computer obviously worked fine for 5 weeks until YOU screwed it up!
You got exactly what you paid for from Best Buy.
I don't especially like Best Buy, but they are not at fault here.
Maybe contact the maker of the anti-virus program.
I believe Gateway uses McAffee.
It was YOUR mistake!
Get over it.

virus you say?

You didn't say how you got the virus. If you downloaded something that had a virus and did not actually buy something like Kaspersky then you are at fault. No one in their right mind would you gateways virus protection. I have had many computer but they never die due to a virus. They die of old age lol. Other than that best buy isn't the greatest place to get a computer. They have NO choices...at least to my knowledge here in Memphis. The Geek Squad doesn't do anything. Computers are not that hard to figure out.
Gateway sucks too. You downloaded something that you wanted and it in turn ruined your computer. Fortunately most virus are caught easily unless you download porn. I would eat your losses and get a computer , download Kaspersky then you should not have any problems. Stay away from pirated pages and or porn. Problem solved. Just got to know what to look for on your computer to find it if you fail to get some kind of protection. Think of it like a condom.

Nothing to do with brand

Getting a virus has nothing to do with the hardware, it's strictly a software issue. I don't know what virus software Gateway bundles with their computers but whatever it is was not configured correctly or was not updated to a current version. Virus's come out all the time and your software has to be kept current to even attempt to stay ahead of them. Even if you do everything correctly it's actually possible to get a virus.
The point is that even the most expensive computer, Gateway, Dell, Lenovo, Sony or whatever can get virus's. Apples get fewer because not as many are written for them but they get them too. The hardware is not the issue and hardware warranty's do not guaranty that you won't get a virus. Fixing the software is also not a hardware issue.
If you didn't set up the software correctly, the Dell may have had the same problem.
Another issue you had is that you did not have your data backed up. That's a mandatory thing you better learn to do. External drives and on-line backups are so cheap and easy these days that there is really no excuse for not doing it.
This is stuff I've learned the hard way by the way. Even knowing all this and experiencing other peoples disasters, I have been negligent in the past and did not keep my software current or my files backed up and suffered the consequences. However, I blamed no one but myself and did what I could to recover and vowed to do better in the future.
It's all just part of the computer world we live in.

Solution

So what your saying is that you bought a computer you didn't want because the one you wanted was out of stock. You paid about the same price for the lowest end laptop you could find. Your upset that they charged you money to remove a virus that you got, and that your computer wasnt worth anything after you got it home? Let me pose another scenario:
You buy a Hyndai Accent, even though the dealer didnt have the Nissan Versa you wanted. You drive it home. The next month you let your insurance lapse, and you get in an accident. So you go back to the dealer with it. They tell you they can fix it but its going to cost close to half of what you paid for it. So you complain that you never wanted that car, and that and you want to trade it in for a new car. Because it has been in an accident, they offer you less than a quarter of the price. So then you pay to have the car fixed but are going to contact Hyndai because you got into an accident with their car....
If you listen to your story or the above mentioned one, I think most people will agree that it is a silly claim. This doesn't even belong on this website. This sounds more like a Facebook blog. Get your sympathy there.
