I'll put this in chronoligical form: 7/31/05, bought E-machines computer from Best Buy along with Norton Security software that they insisted I had to have so I "would not have any trouble".

1 week later, computer goes bad and is replaced by Best Buy.

1 week after that, same situation.

5 months later, 3rd unit goes bad, called E-Machines customer service. I felt that I was entitled to another model under 3 failure "lemon" clause. They said otherwise, it's not 3 failures of a model, it's 3 failures of a specific unit. Basically they said "enjoy your junk". I wont be too harsh, they did offer me a free box to ship it back to Washington State and not see it for 30 days.

Called Best Buy customer service, same responce and they could not have gave gave any less of a d**n.

Geek squad discovers that entire operating system has crashed, but does replace it.

3 months later system becomes corrupted again, sound card begins to go, back to Geek squad. This time they have explination for trouble. The Norton Anti-Virus that THEY sold me is "not a good software" and "can sometimes strain the operating system". They don't "sell it as much anymore" despite stacks of them on the counter. Charged 90 dollars for "diagnostic" and reinstall sound card. It's either that or computer goes on month vacation to Washington State. To deal with this Norton problem, they simply disable software. I could have done that for NOTHING.

Take computer home and decide to uninstall Norton because it's "inferior" but unable to do so, back to Geek squad. This time, another technician back-tracks a little on previous technician's statements, now it's SBC/YAHOO's fault for software conflicts. Ironic since Best Buy had huge promo for YAHOO DSL in summer of 2005, which is where I signed up for it buy the way.

But they have the solution....BUY MORE SOFTWARE ! Not that Norton crap you got before reccomended by us. I said I would take it no charge or to have that "bs" diagnostic fee credited. No way Jose ! I might as well have asked them for their firstborn child and their left you-know-what!

For your next computer, stay away from E-machines. For your next computer purchase, stay away from Best Buy. A shame cause I have a good line of credit with them and any other appliance I got from them was no problem. Maybe I'm just unlucky you tell me.

Here's An Anti-Virus I Use

AUTHOR: Consumer Advocate - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 11, 2006

My Old Computer that I got from Gateway in 2000 had Norton in it and it crashed after a little under two years, the guy at the computer store said to buy a whole new laptop, but then again I am not sure if it was hit by lighting or not as I was gone for a week when it burned out.

I did not even know Anti-Virus could crash your system? I heard that McAfee is good, but I use this cheap one called Zone Alarm from Office Max, it seems to work really well, it alerts me to every little thing on my computer, everytime I open a program it asks me or download music, it has an informative box that pops up before I can do anything else, I hope this thing will work this well in the future. Anyone heard about Zone Alarm? I have used it for 6 months with no problems.

I have a question.

Did you try using any other anti virus (even Norton's own updated version)?

Because that will cause your comp to crash. My husband wanted to put an udated version on my son's Emachine comp. (which I am typing on right now and was bought almost 2 years ago.) and I told him unless he knew how to get rid of all the old traces no, because many people that I know have had that problem.

its Norton

I'm guessing it's Norton Anti-Virus, I have McAffee and it is even deleting traces of that new AIM-Myspace virus I got (not a harmful virus, just autosends IMs). McAffee is the best, I'm probably buying it after my 3 month trial ends, oh yeah, and i'm using an eMachine right now.

I don't know if it's your E-machine

AUTHOR: Aafes - (U.S.A.)

I don't know if it's your E-machine. I can say that I have always found Norton to be irritating in the least. I have purchased several different desktops and two laptops with Norton and found it to be memory and processor intensive, often running in the background even when I closed the program.

With Norton running many applications would not work properly or would take an extended time to load. When I would try to uninstall Norton with it's own uninstaller program, like many programs, I found traces everywhere on the hard drive and hidden in the registry.

You may want to try using a third party uninstaller, there are many on the market. These programs will first call the uninstaller for the particular program you want removed. After this they will search your registry and hard drive for traces of the program and remove these as well.

I use different anti-virus software now with few problems.
