My wife and I bought our son an emachines (CPU,monitor & printer) package from Best Buy for Christmas. The rebates included a $220 rebate from Best Buy.
The printer valued at $50 began malfunctioning within a couple of weeks after receiving the package. I returned the printer to our local Best Buy store. They did not have the same printer or an upgraded printer we were interested in purchasing in stock. I received a refund from the store clerk for the cost of the the printer.
On 1/23/06 I received a letter from Best Buy stating they were unable to honor our rebate request as our purchase was returned to the store and no qualifying purchase was made.
I contacted BestBuy.com to inquire about why the rebate was not honored. My wife and I spent hours trying to resolve the problem and were unable to get the rebate center to honor the rebate, telling them we would buy the same printer, an upgrade or deduct the amount for the printer in order for Best Buy to honor the rebate.
We filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Ms. Sarah Wiles-Best Buy Executive Resolutions Specialist replied, unfortunately in order to qualify for this rebate offer it was required that all necessary products, and if any of the products are then returned it voids the rebate offer. In closing Ms. Wiles gave us a concilatory $25 gift card.
We have heard every kind of reason why Best Buy is avoiding honoring our rebate. Last night the person at the rebate center said they were unable to honor our rebate because the rebate offer had expired.
We want Best Buy to stand by their products and honor their rebate offers. We will be happy to do as indicated above for Best Buy to honor the rebate in addition to having them void the concilatory $25 gift card if they will honor their rebate.

Computer package rebates require specific purchases to be honored. If you return ANY portion of the package, the rebate is void as the package requirements are now not met. In other words, you have to spend a certain amount of money to get a certain amount of money back.
What would have prevented this from happening is if you would have just exchanged the printer rather than returning it. That way, the requirements are still met and you would have received your rebate.
You're out of luck on this rebate now, so use this as a learning experience and move on. One other thing...it is the rebate house that's declining your rebate. Not Best Buy.
