Bethany Group, Bethany Management Group ,Bethany Group not returning security deposits Irvine California

I rented an apartment for two years (from '06 - '08) at Willow Lake Apts in Laurel, MD. Leaving the apartment in excellent shape, I expected immediate refund of my security deposit with interest. After 90 days passed, I called the property manager and she said she'd look into it. Several days later, I called again. No response. I sent certified letters to the property and to Bethany. No response. This continued on for about another month.

At this point, I opened a court case against them and suddenly, I received a check. It was for the security deposit, but no interest was included. My lawyer told me I should drop the case because I wouldn't have a leg to stand on since they were attempting to make ammends. Also, this was his way of releasing me of having to pay his bills. (Trying to be a decent guy.) Once the case was closed, I deposited the check. A few days later, the check issuer (Bethany) put a stop payment on the check. I've contacted the site and Bethany several times with no response again. I'm in the same position I was before, only now a year has passed. I made a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and I'm debating on talking to another lawyer. I just want my money back. This is about $2,000 of my hard earned money that they owe me.
