I have been a loyal customer of this particular Big 5 store for 10 years and have purchased several long guns over that time period. On the evening of November 1, 2013 an employee named Mike refused to allow me to purchase a Mossberg 12 ga. shotgun that the chain had advertised for $299.99. Mike apparently is an anti-gun person because he absolutely refused to sell me the weapon because I intended to present it as a gift to my wife in the future. I realize that a change in ownership must be submitted thru an FFL holder when the transfer is made. But I am a qualified purchaser and it is niot illegal to give a firearm to my wife as a gift if I so desire. Mike cannot force his beliefs upon me. I am an NRA Life Member, a disabled vet and a retired businessman and I have NEVER been treated this way by anyone. I would strongly encourage everyone to avoid shopping at Big 5 and particularly the store in Moreno Valley, California. Law abiding customers cannot be treated this way by employees based upon their personal beliefs or attitudes.

It's probably not Mike's predjudice.   You said the gun is for someone else; not you.  PERIOD.  That is an important fact.  It means that the person who is getting the gun is NOT passing the background check, you are.   Everyone getting a gun must pass a background check.  That is a harsher restriction than question 11a on the form 4473 calls for.  The harsher restriction means you CAN'T buy one for someone else in Big 5 (and maybe the State of California.)  No matter how much you're angered by this, you can't have someone else by-pass the background check by buying it for them.  No matter who they are.  Just becuase YOU are going through a background check, doesn't mean the person getting the gun is going through a background check.  Why are you trying to get your wife to by-pass a gun background check?  Why not buy a gift card, give it to her, and have her go into the store so she can pass the background check?

Gun laws are not perfect.  The gun would still be under the same roof no matter who passes the check.  But the approach will help people who are getting guns pass a background check.

I doubt the employee could do anything except obey policy.  It sounds like you were so incredibly angry that you didn't even hear him try to explain all this.  And even if he had, I doubt you would have agreed with it.

If you don't agree with the policy, go ahead and try to get the store-level staff fired.  (Everyone else does).   Did he make the policy?  Did you ask?  Did he offer options?  Did you just blow-up and draw your own conclusions?
