Do not fall in love like I did with the cute rental cottage with 2 terraces, French doors and a river running behind it on Old Mill Road in Chesterland. The lying caretaker next door will break your heart with false promises and heartless lack of concern for your welfare!

In August of 2003, I moved into this adorable Sears Roebuck house with dreams of living there forever. My questions about the undesirable condition of the furnace and the lack of insulation in the walls were answered with an assurance that it would be taken care of, and that I would have no trouble keeping the little place warm. Yes, I was warned not to use the lovely fireplace, even though there was an inviting stack of wood set up in it. I begged to have it checked/repaired for an alternate heat source, and finally was told, sure, he would look into it.

When winter set in I asked the caretaker to please have the furnace checked, as it wasn't working as it should, I was informed that I simply had to push the "reset" button and it would go back on! This guy would keep the lawn mowed for me and even rake the gravel in the driveway (!), but when it came to doing something to assure my health and safety, nothing doing! The owner, a Dr. John H. Kennedy, is older and lives in England. The caretaker's attitude was, if I was unhappy for any reason, there was no lease, but simply a monthly rental agreement, so I could move out any time I wished.

To make a long story short, my cat and I nearly froze to death in that place! The weather turned very cold in December and early January, and the filthy little furnace could not keep up with it. In spite of the fact that I kept the thermostat on 63-65', I poured about $600.00 into the oil tank in 3 months of usage, a little more than the $200-400 Bill had said it would probably require for the whole winter! Finally, it had to be reset 2-3 times a day, and then began tripping the breaker. When it exploded one evening, I knew I'd had all I could take. Weakened from pneumonia and the flu, I packed up my possessions with numb fingers and moved out at the end of January.

I realize that I should have followed my own better judgement about the condition of the furnace, but I would never have believed that such a sweet old "gentleman" and his wife would have so coldly ignored and neglected another human being in trouble. I wish I could have all that wasted money back, but I did learn a valuable lesson, which will never be repeated.
