I went to Bill Heard Chevrolet in Collierville, TN today to look into buying a used car and to have my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe (37000 miles) appraised. I mainly just wanted to have the car appraised, so I picked out some car at random. It was a 2007 Ford Mustang they had on their used car lot with 28000 miles on it. We took it for a test drive while they were looking at my Santa Fe. After the drive, we went back into the office. I asked what the trade in value of my car was Troy, the sales manager said they'd only give me 8000 for it. I had done some research and had it appraised at another dealership which offered me 9500. I said thanks but I wasn't going to take the new car if that's all they were going to offer me.
Troy then got very irate and unprofessional and said to me rudely and aggressively, "what did you expect for a Santa Fe," like it was a piece of garbage. Then he asked me why I bought it in the first place. I told him it was none of his business and if he was going to use that tone of voice with me I was leaving. Except they had my keys. I insisted that they give me the keys immediately, but he kept trying to shove a new car down my throat and kept me in the office for another 30 minutes while he "sent" someone to go find my keys. I told him that he was wasting his time and mine by not returning the keys when I asked for them but if he wanted to play games with me he could since I had nowhere to go and could tie up his time all afternoon. He told me in no certain terms that he did not appreciate me coming out to his dealership and wasting his time when he could be using it to sell cars to "real" buyers.
I told him he could have saved 30 minutes if he just gave me my keys when I asked for them the first time instead of trying to get me to buy a new car when I told him repeatedly that I was not interested if that was the best they could do with my trade in. For this he had no answer, stormed out of the office, and had my keys in his hand within 30 seconds. He then proceeded to slam them down on the desk instead of handing them to me. I told him he was acting very unprofessionally and that I and no one that I knew would ever shop at Bill Heard Chevrolet after how rudely I was treated.

The Big Question

The big question here is who's time was more wasted. You had no interest in buying a vehicle. Yor first sentence was "to look into buying a used car AND to have my 2003....appraised". Your second sentence was, "I mainly just wanted to have the car appraised". Then you go on to say "I just picked out some car at random". You totally wasted this guy's time. As the other person posted, you could have gone to edmund's or kelley BB and gotten an appraisal and saved yourself AND the salesman's time. As much as I hate car dealer, IF you had been up front with him in the beginning, you could have saved everyone a bunch of time.

obviously B.M.W. doesn't remember all the details too clearly

Mr. Matt was in the store probably less than 15 minutes total. I've been working for Bill Heard for over 7 years and I hear lots of complaints. Most of them aren't true, unfortunately, some are. This one isn't. True facts are we are not a wholesale company and aren't in business to appraise people's cars unless they're in the market for another car. I know the exact person who filed this complaint, his initials are in the heading. B.M.W. He filled out a credit report, offered a rediculous amount for the 07 mustant and wanted more than book retail for his Santa Fe. His Santa Fe was silver with a sunroof and leather, but he wanted $15000 trade for it. This is a car that was around $22-24 K 4 years ago when it was new. There was zero argument, he got his keys and left because he wasn't able to get over $3k over retail for his trade and $3k less than retail for the mustang. Nobody held his keys, nobody hid his keys, nothing like that. He was in and out in just a few minutes. If he was looking for a trade appraisal only, why did he fill out a credit application? Doesn't make much sense does it? Mr. B.M.W. should really think about what he's saying before he starts making false accusations.

Matt, i think he had every right to be upset, these guys are on commision only and if they don't sell they don't get paid. If the only thing you wanted was to get your car appraised than you should go to Edmunds or the kelly blue book site to get a idea of what it's worth. I do not agree with how he treated you but I do understand his frustration. I have some friends that sell cars and they are good at what they do and thier actually honest, I asked them about what you did and they said what I am saying, If all you want is to see what your used car is worth than go to your bank, credit union or the internet and don't waste someones time because to some people thier time is actually worth something.
