My 17 year old daughter has been battling drug addiction for almost 4 years. Started with weed and ecstasy, progresssed to spice, heroin, Bars and now meth. She has been arrested and placed in juvi, gone through 2 partcial hospitalization programs relapsed from both. She steals to support her habit, vandalised property while under the influence been convicted of assalut, possesion and shopplifting, been on probation twice and is facing a current charge. She drives under the influence. She lies and manipulates to get what she wants, runs away and sleeps on the streets to get high, been hospitalized twice. Her probation officer, therapist, counselor and the current parcial hopitalization program treating her have referred her to an inpatient residential facility.
The crtiteria that must be met per Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan thru Magellan Behavorial Health has been met. Regina at Megellan feels the criteria has been met. Yet Magellan on behalf of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michiganh as denied the initial claim, the doctor to doctor appeal has been denied. The doctor that works for Magellan and has never treated or met my daughter denied the claim and we are cuurenlty waiting on an expedited appeal that can take up to 72 hours.
In the mean time she is in a residential treatment program that if Blue Cross and Blue Shiled of Michigan continues to deny the claims I will have to pay for the 5 days and remove her from the program as financially I am already bankrupt from trying to get her help. Substance abuse and residential is a covered benefit on my policy!
I have post my story to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan's facebbok page they removed the posts and blocked me. I have requested a call from them via email, and facebook with no action on there part. Except a low level customer service rep called methis morning , she did not see the denial in the system. I had to tell her that is because these claims are handled via Magellan.
Thank you Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan along with Magellan Behavorial health

You must be the media watchdog for BCBSM. Fail out of college? Your comment is based on the cleff note version of the full story. The first rehad was for people with Asperbers or Autistic and they slapped a label of partial hospitalization on them selves knowing that insurance comapnies push for PHP versus residential treatment. They did not treat addiction normally but that is who the insurance company said we had to take her to.
Now the current claim was denied because the facility she is in does not have 24 hour nurse care and a doctor visit daily. That is a higher level of care. We are not requesting that level of care. We are requesting a lower level of care you know at a lower level of cost to the insurance company.
I have never considered tossing her on the streets. She can be a functioning memeber of society that contributes she just needs a little help. She has paid every fine or served her time for every crime she has committed....It is the juvinile system....they rehad not throw away!
Jail, hmmm......lets see Jail at the publics expense...you know the tax dollar? Your right lets dump this on the tax payer! Not on the company I pay for insurance through with this benefit off coverage.
ugh......BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF MICHIGAN........YOU MEDIA WATCHDOG IS A FOOL. He or she thinks it is the problem of the tax payer!

Since you state that your daughter has already been in two other treatment facilities, they MAY be denying it BECAUSE of that little fact alone. There is only ONE cure. Let her go JAIL!!!! She can get the help she needs while serving her time. While it is admirable that you wish to help your daughter, but bailing her out each time she gets into trouble is ENABLING!!!! YOU have been doing your best to keep her out of the system, but HER addiction is to the point that ONLY drastic action is going to change her. YOU and I both know that YOU have thought this yourself. And that YOU have thought about this A LOT. You are going to have to send her inside if you want to get her help.
And yes they ARE going to block you. Im betting YOU didnt pay for her previous two treatments. This means that your insurance paid it. They are NOT going to throw good money at a bad person. If your daughter DID NOT get off drugs after TWO stays in rehab, then it makes sense that they wont pay for a third stay. If the first two did nothing then they are pretty sure that a third stay is going to have the same results. While I feel for your situation, sometimes you have to do the thing you want most in the world NOT to do. In this case, your daughter is going to have to go to jail. She can recieve the help she needs there and THEY will make d**n sure she doesnt get to use drugs while inside. Yes it suck. Yes it makes YOUR daughter a FELON. But when an addiction gets THAT BAD, drastic action MUST be taken.
The insurance company HAS THE RIGHT to deny a claim. They have done so in this case. Get over it and send her butt to JAIL!!!! If you dont, the next "visit" you may get with her is through a inch thick plexiglass window at the county morge. If you dont want her dead in the gutter then DO THE RIGHT THING!!!! FORCE HER to get the help she needs. Its OBVIOUS by your own words that volentary is NOT working, now it MUST be compulsery. Its either that or wash your hands of her. Its obvious she has a problem. More often then not its a INTERNAL issue such as with a family member or the state of her life. SHE isnt "getting over it". Whatever "IT" is.
While you present an interesting sob story, what is going on is NOT a ripoff. Denying YOUR claim after two previous visits to rehab did no good is JUST common sense. Perhaps YOU should seek therapy as well. Because YOU are lashing out. The insurance company DID NOT put the drugs in your daughters system. The insurance company DOESNT have to pay just so your daughter can relapse. Its not the insurance companies job to take care of YOUR daughter. I hate to be mean, but one has to say, this really reflects POORLY on YOU as a parent.
