My friend and I purchased two unweaned baby Gray necked parrots arrows from Mr. Marolf who does business with another breeder in his network, whose name is Jan (Never got her last name). I waited for a few weeks until the babies were old enough to ship from FL to CA, and they arrived fully feathered. Mr. Marolf is a wholesaler, who sells baby parrots to other breeders, retailers, and pet stores, and I myself have been involved with breeding and raising psittacines for 21 years, so am no novice.

These babies arrived late on my end, so I brought them home, gave them electrolytes and probiotics with their formula, and put them to bed. The next morning (eight hours later) the male baby still had a full crop of formula. This is NOT good. I immediately contacted Jan and she said she never had any issues. Throughout the day, the male continued to have issues digesting. My friend had purchased this bird, so before sending him to her I informed her of the problem. She took him into the vet right away, and was informed he had numerous infections, including yeast and bacteria. He was placed on a series of medications.

Meanwhile, the female stopped gaining weight and began losing weight the second day I had her. She was seen by my avian veterinarian who diagnosed her as having a rather severe bacterial infection and yeast was present. I immediately contacted Jan who informed me to contact Mr. Marolf. In the interim I forwarded her the vet invoices and asked that she pay at least 1/2 of the vet bill (which would have been around $96, and considering I paid $1400 PER BIRD, $96 is minimal). She said she would "Get back with me in a couple days" but that I needed to contact Mr. Marolf since he is her broker.

Fast forward 5 days later.... Jan never "got back" with me, and Mr. Marolf stopped answering my texts after I told him that the male was still extremely sick and was now on different medications as the first we're not working. This poor bird had to have his crop suctioned every day as he was not digesting properly. My friend had already spent around $300 in vet care for this bird. I again asked Paul to contact the veterinarian as well as my friend (whom he had done business with before) and he continued to make excuses and say he couldn't reach her (said he had tried to call but it went to voicemail, yet there was no call history on her phone showing he had ever attempted to call). I told him she works weekends and he needed to text her as she is not able to talk on the phone during her shifts. He never even attempted to text her.

In the beginning, before he had my money, he replied almost immediately to texts and even phone calls. As soon as I notified him of the condition of the birds,me would often never reply, or in one case, replied almost a week later. After THREE WEEKS of trying to get these individuals to help cover these costs, or to purchase the birds back for what we paid, I finally gave up. I informed Mr. Marolf I did not need reimbursement for medical care for the female as she was fine and her vet bill was very minimal, but the male is still, to this day, sick. He was supposed to be a future breeder but this is no longer possible. He needs his crop suctioned about every 3 days. The veterinarian said this was not something that happened overnight and that his illness had been progressing for at least a week prior to his being sent out to us. I repeatedly asked both Jan and Mr. Marolf to contact the veterinarians handling these birds but neither acted on my request.

Upon further investigation, it turns out Mr. Marolf has quite the history as a scammer. I should have done my due diligence and researched him prior to purchasing, which is my fault. However, considering he was a referral by a mutual breeder, I didnt think I needed to be concerned. Use caution if you purchase birds from this business, especially if he says they are coming from one of his "suppliers" and are not actually his. The mere fact he is promoting the sale of birds from this woman is a clear indicator that Mr. Marolf is only concerned about money, not client satisfaction or the health of the birds he is selling.
