I recently attended a seminar hosted by Dan Vega and the Bluestar Business Institute. The reason I came is that I had seen an ad where a company was looking for speakers who would be paid several thousand dollars per speaking engagement.
According to someone on the phone from the company, she told me that I could expect to speak several times a year for thousands of dollars. She invited me to a seminar that Mr Vega was hosting.
When I arrived, I discovered that there were about 100 other want to be speakers. The seminar started in the morning, and lasted most of the day until around 5:30pm with several speakers, mostly hearing from Mr Vega. What he was talking about seemed like a bunch of jibberish and BS. It had NOTHING to do with any public speaking opportunities and really had little to no value for anyone in the room, as everyone in attendance had come to learn about an opportunity.
At the end of the day, around 5:30pm, Dan pitched a program that he was selling asking for $6000 and how at this price, it was a no brainer and a steal. He proceeded to tell everyone it was not about the money, as he did not need any money since he had already made millions. Nobody seemed to really know exactly what they were going to get for $6000. Kind of funny.
After the pitch, Dan told people who were interested in public speaking to stick around and hear about that opportunity. Well, that was about 90% of the people, although some had to leave who had kids and other commitments, as they had already spent their day from 8 to 5:30 and got noting about any opportunity to speak.
I decided to hear Dan talk about speaking opportunities. That too was equally disappointing, as he then proceeded to pitch to people the opportunity to buy a Bluestar Franchise, whatever that was. This was according to Dan, "a great deal at only $5000" because this franchise would make you millions. Of course, if you don't want to really be a business person and invest in the best business opportunity out there, you could just speak several times a year at these franchises and still make $5-10k per month, but this was the not a very attractive alternative according to Dan.
Funny thing was that after about 1.5-2 hours, the time now being around 7-7:30pm, there still was NO concrete plan or next step defined as to how someone could make thousands of dollars speaking. The crowd was just told to send in a video, which I did.
The only thing I got back from Dan or his organization was a call to meet Dan personally and have some time with him. I declined. I am sure it was nothing other than a pitch to attend his "Elite Millionaire School" or buy a franchise, what ever that was.
I am not the smartest person in the world, but it was very obvious from about 1-2 hours into the program that there was NO public speaking opportunity like was pitched and that the entire day was just a big infomercial for Dan to pitch programs for thousands of dollars that would make you a multi millionaire.
My humble advice. Don't waste your time and certainly not your money. Instead, get a good book on sales or starting a business, draft up a plan of action and begin marketing yourself the way most businesses do-one phone call, networking event, email, blog post, etc at a time.
Dan Vega and BSB Institute are nothing like they claim. Do your homework, measure twice and be careful. Trust me, I have seen this in action!

I feel very misled...

I had an almost identical experience to the above poster.
Blue Star Business Institute uses a very creative, and misleading technique to fill the room: they post job offerings knowing that in a down economy they can get people to flock to their seminars.
In my case and that of many others, they posted an ad on Craigslist that they were looking for speakers.
After submitting your resume, you're contacted by one of their staff who is "impressed" by it. They invite you to an interview with Mr. Vega where you'll get to see him speak and also have some one on one face time with him to interview for a job.
When you arrive to the seminar you are under the impression that Mr. Vega is conducting a training to a room full of people eager to learn, and that you're one of the chosen few who he wants to personally meet with.
You are soon shocked to learn that 90% of the people in the room are also there for a one on one interview with Mr. Vega. You also start doing the math and realize that there's no chance whatsoever you're getting any time with him. At this point you don't necessarily mind because you're starting to feel very misled.
From there it is exactly as stated above...Mr. Vega meets with potential speakers (en masse, not one on one) after the seminar and asks for a sample. It's anybody's guess if he listens to them or not.
After that you get strung out for a couple weeks (or months). And then it happens...
In my case I was then contacted by the extremely abrasive and conceited Lee Papier, who informed me I was hired and I just needed to come to the "Elite Millionaire Course" (the $6,000 upsell from the free one day seminar that they bait prospective speakers into). I said, "great." He then dropped the hammer..."Oh, and we don't do freebies. The cost is $6,000."
Wow.
All that, for THAT?!
I would be much more tolerant of a hard aggressive close from the platform that told me I was an idiot and a loser if I didn't buy. It's a lot less insulting and A LOT less disappointing than the slimy circus they take you through.
If you attended the free one day seminar expecting to be educated on some very basic people skills, it's not necessarily bad...I will say that for them. But when you're told the CEO has requested a one on one interview and it leads to a 3 month bait and switch along with a Lee Papier encore (who clearly doesn't pay any heed to Dan's personality profile material), it uhm...sucks.
Kind of like ordering a filet mignon and being brought a bowl of Spaghetti O's.

Blue Star Business Institute/Dan Vega - An Excellent Seminar!
AUTHOR: MM - (USA)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, February 22, 2011
I recently attended a 1 Day seminar hosted by Dan Vega and the Blue Star Business Institute in Newport Beach on January 20th, 2011. It was a highly educational and motivational experience. The quality of the presenters and information taught was exceptional. The seminar covered many topics in life and business. There was solid information on becoming more successful as a business person and entrepreneur.
The audience was well educated and there were business people from various industries in attendance along with many public speakers and trainers. There was great information presented that could be immediately used to improve your focus, communication, productivity and profitability. The approach was result oriented without a lot of the usual fluff and hype. In addition, we were given practical and easy ways to improve your credit score and how to be best create an optimal credit history. The seminar also provided a great opportunity to network with successful people.
The seminar went from 8am to 5pm. There were six or more speakers who were sincere and gifted in their respective areas and they shared a good deal of high quality information. There was a lot of value and inspiration from the education offered by Blue Star, Mr. Vega and the various speakers.
A four-day program called the Elite Millionaire Course was offered, but there was no sales pressure or hard sell and a relatively short time was given to this topic.
After the formal seminar ended, Mr. Vega invited anyone interested in being a speaker or instructor with Blue Star to stay for a separate meeting. He also said he was going to share the vision of his company, its mission and some of the other opportunities offered by Blue Star. There was no pressure and many people stayed.
For me, this was even more exciting than the seminar, as Mr. Vega shared his vision and mission in the educational field and in the economy. He shared two basic opportunities with the group. Anyone wanting to be a speaker or instructor with Blue Star could send a sample of their work to the company for review. There was no other requirement. You did not have to purchase anything or take their seminars. Mr. Vega even said that if this is all you want to do that you do not have to stay for the rest of the meeting. Most people stayed to hear more anyway.
Secondly, there was an opportunity to manage a school/franchise with the company. Usually most franchises require a significant down payment or investment, but there was only a nominal requirement to take the four-day course that you would be promoting and possibly teaching. If a person qualified for a school/franchise there would be a fair profit sharing arrangement instead of a usual, large franchise fee upfront. It was a pleasure to see such a reasonable and fair opportunity presented without a lot of hype or pressure.
Most of the people that I spoke with enjoyed the day and received a lot of value. Many of the people invited for the speaker opportunity did not even have to pay for the day of education so that they could experience the program and see if they wanted to work with Blue Star.
My experience is completely the opposite of what I read in the previous comment. I found real value in the education provided and it was a great day. I was not promised anything but a solid day of cutting-edge material and some possible opportunities if it was a good fit and that is what I received.
