On June 13, 2009 I was in search of a used, late model car with decent mileage and under $6,000 (including taxes, fees, etc). I started my search near my home in Middlesex, NJ and wasn't able to find anything within my budget.

On a whim I decided to call Brad Benson Hyundai in South Brunswick to see if they had anything in stock that was within my budget, before actually driving the 45 minutes to get there. I was told by David Testa that they had at lest 4 or 5 Elantras or Accents on the lot that matched and to come on down. I was immediately skeptical because more than once he said "get here fast" and "they might not last" and "we are really busy today".

Forty-five minutes later I arrived (to an empty showroom) and said I was there to see David. The sales manager Marcello told me David was busy, but he'd be happy to send someone over to help me. A few moments later "Garrit" showed up. He started taking down my information immediately, which no other dealer had done. I'm sure they'll use that information to fill my mailbox with junk mail.

After taking my I told Garrit what I was looking for and what I had to spend. I told him that I spoke with David on the phone and that he assured me they had some cars on the lot within my price range. He immediately tried to upsell me a newer car with a "small" monthly payment. I told him I was not interested in financing a car and I wanted to pay cash and be done. He said "What if I told you I could get you in a new car for under $200 a month?" Again, and more firm I said "I said I do not want to finance a car", to which he responded "Why not?" Finally, I said, almost yelling at this point, "I told you I do not want to finance. I said no twice already. Take no for the answer and leave it at that."

After our little spat over financing Garrit went to talk with Marcello again about what they may have for $6,000 "out the door". A few moments later he came back with "I'm sorry, but it doesn't look like we have anything within your price range." At that point I got angry, shot out a few expletives and told him and everyone else in the showroom that I did not like being lied to. I asked to speak to David so I could confirm with him that what he told me on the phone was not true. Of course he was out on a test drive now, so he was still unavailable. I yelled a few more expletives and told them they better tell David to get his "stuff" together and stop lying to potential customers to make them take an unneeded 1.5 hour trip (45 mins each way) out of their way. Garrit apologized and I said "Yea, right. 'Fudge' you", and then walked out.

Bottom line is this: They will tell you anything to get you in the door. Once you are in the door they won't listen to you and try to upsell you. I'm sure they get alot of people this way, but not me. I had heard bad things about this place before I went, so I knew what I was getting into. Do not shop here. Save yourself the drive.

(Silver lining: I stopped at (((competitor's name redacted)))on the way home since I was already in the area and found exactly what I was looking for. A nice, late model used car with very low milage for $6,200 including taxes, and dmv fees. Sorry Brad, that could have been your $6k!)

sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome.
