Michael Proctor is the owner and head instructor of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu Academy of Tacoma which falls under the Marcello Monteiro Association. At first Michael seems like a good guy but he can be very deceptive. He claims that he's such a good person and Christian but he then does very unchristian things like talking bad about people to his jiu-jitsu students. I've never really hung out with him outside of the Academy other than being friends on Facebook. This is mainly from my experience within the jiu-sitsu setting of his academy.

Whenever he doesn't like someone or if he feels like someone is doing him wrong then he will defame that person badly in front of his students. While I was there many students left his academy because of his unprofessional attitude and practices as a Head instructor. Many times he would air out all his quarrels about people on his personal Facebook page which would make me feel uneasy as he was my Head jiu-jitsu coach.

I would hear other people complaining about the things that he does but I would always turn a blind eye and give him the benefit of the doubt. That all changed until I had financial hardship in which I asked him to freeze my account. He agreed to do so however I was still looking for work at the time when the account freeze ended.

So my wife called his billing company disputing the charge because she was upset that we were being billed for a service that we were not using. Mind you, she handles all of the bills in our household. I take full responsibilty on my part for not cancelling my membership before the freeze ended. I was tirelessly looking for a job at the time so jiu-jitsu was the last thing on my mind.

I texted Mike telling him that I didn't want to be billed anymore and that I wanted to cancel my membership. He texted me back with an irrate text basically saying that since I disputed the charge that I would have to deal with his billing company from now on and if I want to do further business with him then I should email or call him. So I then I emailed him telling him that I wanted to cancel my membership.

However I later find out by his billing company that he never cancelled my membership and that I was continuing to be charged. I had to foward them the email of me asking him to cancel my membership. Then unknowingly my wife inboxed him on Facebook a couple weeks later asking him why he wouldn't just cancel the account as I was being charge for 2 more months when I already emailed him my cancellation. He then inboxes me on Facebook asking me why my wife is messaging him and saying that my wife has belittled him and his academy. He also states that I'm not man enough to speak with him and that I should be more personable by giving him a simple phone call. He states that she will be the reason why I will not be allowed back at his academy.

So I then call him twice but he doesn't answer. And then I message him on Facebook telling him that I called him twice and that he should call me back as soon as he can. And then I tell him not to ever question my manhood. He then mesages me back saying that he's busy preparing for a seminar and that he will not be calling me back. Then he goes on saying that if I want to say more then I should be a man and come to his academy.

Basically I will admit that I did fail to cancel my membership before the freeze ended. But I did email him to cancel it like he said I should do but he still wouldn't cancel it. I even also called him like he asked me to but then he messages me saying that he's not calling me back. What type of professionalism is that? Just so he could show off in front of his students and put on a tough guy act.

Wouldn't the Christian thing to do is cancel or even reimburse your student when they haven't been attending classes in months? I understand that a contract is a contract and a business is business, but when a person attempts to resolve the issue the reasonable thing to do is to put your best effort in fixing the issue.

I would warn anyone within the Tacoma/Seattle area that is looking to get into jiu-jitsu to stay far away from Michael Proctor as far as you can. He will seem like a nice guy at first but you will soon see the signs of his unprofessionalism in just a short time.

I was previously a student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of Tacoma, I had a love for jiu jitsu, which quickly became a battle to continue going to this accademy. The head coach talkes ill of anyone he doesn't like at the accademy, and even those he claimes to like. This is almost on a daily basis. If there is a problem with a student, he either airs in infront of the students, or waits until the last minuite and attacks them. There has been many times when I have gotten involved in problems I had no connection to. I was a dedicated student and when I was promoted he verbalized that I was one of the most dedicated students he has ever had. It was shortly after he had a personal problem with me but never voiced it to my face like a professional business owner would. Instead I woke up to attacks on Facebook and through emails. He claims that people are welcome to come in and talk to him but I have recieved many VIOLENT THREATS saying "come get your a** beat", "psychotic b****", "stupid", "who the f*** do you think you are", "I'll be outside from 2pm on, come talk to my face and know I won't be happy", and much more. Many times I have tried to clear issues up but he will not accept anything he does not want to. He has also ran out of the accademy to yell at strangers for where they park and instigate a fight (with an older women who was going to a resturaunt). The students at this accademy are good people and nice, but it is only the HEAD COACH that brings ill into the training, yet blames it all on others.

I currently have 200+ students and parents enrolled at my academy. One thing I've learned through the years is that I cannot make everybody happy when running a business.

There are 3 types of memberships at my academy, Monthly, Charter, Lifetime. Monthly Memberships require an initial 12 month term with the option to resign in a year or continue on open-ended. Charter Memberships are 1 year paid in full. Lifetime Memberships are just that. All memberships have their different perks as do any other fitness gym enrollment.

Monthly Memberships- Everyone that prefers to enroll via monthly tuition must sign an initial 12 month term. There are no exceptions to this, everybody is on equal ground. Students are able to freeze their account (stop tuition) for one month. Students can also cancel their accounts anytime they want with 30 days notice. If a student decides to quit before their 12 month term is up they must pay 25% of their remaining balance (months remaining). ALL students sign their own contracts and copies are available anytime.

Running a business where the business is people is not easy, but I treat everybody with respect and have the credentials and references to prove it. I am the business owner and the Head Instructor, very few understand what that entails. People would rather place blame then try to understand and take responsibility. My doors are always open and anybody with an issue is more then welcome to come in and talk instead of hiding behind a computer.

-Professor Michael Proctor
