IF YOU EVER WONDERED IF RACISM AND PREJUDICE WAS ALIVE THEN HERE IS THE ANSWER FROM THIS ARTICLE:
Pittsburgh basketball game marred by horrible racist banana suited monkey chants
By Cameron Smith | Prep Rally

Vile racism raised its ugly head during a boys basketball game near Pittsburgh on Friday when fans of a nearly all-white suburban school ran on the court in banana suits and made monkey noises to taunt the players for their rivals, who play for a school which is predominantly African-American.

As reported by a variety of Pittsburgh media outlets, the Monessen Valley Independent and WPXI prominent among them, the annual basketball rivalry game between Pittsburgh (Pa.) Brentwood High and Monessen (Pa.) High turned extremely ugly when the two teams tried to head to their respective locker rooms for halftime. Before the players could leave the floor, three fans from the visiting Brentwood student section ran onto the court in full-body banana suits.

The fans surrounded the Monessen players and allegedly began making monkey noises and hurling racial epithets at the Monessen players, with no one entering the fray to stop the horribly inappropriate catcalls.

"I was appalled and shocked, " Monessen parent Terri Payne told WPXI. "I was like, 'I can't believe they're doing that, and they didn't do anything about it.'"

Disturbingly, other Monessen parents claim that the Brentwood players hurled similar racist epithets themselves, calling the Greyhounds "monkeys and cotton pickers, " as one Monessen fan told WPXI.

Meanwhile, Valley Independent staff writer Jeremy Sellew claimed that Brentwood Director of Security Joseph Kozarian, who was on duty at the game, refused to intervene, instead sitting back and at one point smiling and laughing with the Brentwood fans in the stands.

As more media attention has swirled around the disgusting incident, Brentwood officials have scrambled to try and alleviate pressure on the school and district as a whole. As of Tuesday the three students involved had been identified and disciplined, though their punishment was not disclosed to the media. Similarly, officials claimed they were "reviewing school policy to make sure a similar incident doesn't happen again."

Clearly, that's not strong enough. If the banana suit incident and subsequent racist abuse from Brentwood players occurred as numerous witnesses claim it did, the entire Brentwood season should be put under much deeper inspection before moving forward.

This is legitimate hate speech, after all, and the teenagers who were responsible need to realize just how damaging that is, both to their victims, themselves and society as a whole. At the very least, any players who made racist comments during the game itself should be punished significantly.

HERE IS ANOTHER ARTICLE ABOUT THE INCIDENT

Bad behavior at Brentwood
By Jeremy Sellew, VALLEY INDEPENDENT
Monday, February 6, 2012

I've been attending high school basketball games since I was in middle school. I feel privileged to have a job which allows me to go watch a game and get paid for it. That being said, I can not believe what I witnessed Friday night. For those of you that didn't attend the Monessen's 59-45 win at Brentwood game I'll give some details and you can fill in the blanks.

To say it was a chippy game would be an under-statement, but that's competitive sports. It happens in football, basketball, baseball and I'll go as far to say it hap-pens in curling. Members of both teams were trash-talking. After the buzzer sounded for halftime, though, things took a disgusting turn.

Two or three members of the Brentwood student section donned full-body banana costumes and decided to run around the Greyhound players using racial slurs and referring to them as monkeys. Being at the scorer's table, I couldn't hear every-thing that came from the student section. I didn't need to, though. I had heard enough.

Did Brentwood's Director of Security Joseph Kozarian do anything? No. At one point he was smiling and laughing with the entire student section. I understand that as a visiting team, you expect to be harassed by a home team's crowd. There's absolutely no reason for the harassment to be racially motivated.

I grew up on Reed Avenue in Monessen. I had friends of every race. I was taught by my parents to never judge any-one by the color of their skin. For Brentwood officials, parents and students to let this kind of action take place is absolutely appalling. And this isn't the first time an incident of this nature has happened involving Brentwood.

From what I under-stand, Monessen parents have started flooding Brentwood officials with emails and phone calls about their experience inside the walls of their school district. Good for them. I only hope that Monessen's district officials will do the same, whether it's by phone, email or a sit-down meeting.

Yes, there was some trash talking by the Monessen players, like I said. But I commend the players and their coaches for keeping their heads and doing the best thing they could have done, which was maintain composure and win the game. Monessen's Chavas Rawlins was also intentionally shoved into wall and doors under the hoop while going in for a layup by Brentwood's Joe Pilarski.

The talented junior, who has a promising football career ahead of him, left the Monessen fans breathless as he held his knee in pain. He did return to the game a few minutes later. It was a cheap shot and Pilarski, who appeared proud of his actions, should have been thrown out of the game. No questions asked.

The worst part of it, though, was Spartan's coach Dave Mislan, blaming the referees for the actions of his star player. Brentwood fans and administrators should be ashamed of their behavior at the game Friday. Therefore, my Solutions are simple.

1. The WPIAL/PIAA should intervene as well, especially since each school reads that sportsmanship message before each game.

2. I urge Greyhounds' fans to contact their administrators and Brentwood administrators and voice their displeasure with the events at Friday's game.

HERE IS A THIRD ARTICLE AS WELL ON THE INCIDENT

Racism Alive And Well At Pittsburgh Brentwood High School, BYU, February 9, 2012
By: Bison Messink

As jarring as it is when racism, ignorance and bigotry reveals itself honestly, I'm glad that it happens because it's otherwise too easy to pretend that these things don't still exist in 2012.

Just in case you thought racism was dead, the good folks at Pittsburgh Brentwood high school recently put their bigotry on full display, instead of hiding it in covert whispers and politically correct racial code words....

It's a bad week for those who deny racism.Last Friday, two (some reports say three) students from the predominantly white Brentwood showed up to a home basketball game wearing banana costumes and took the floor at halftime to taunt their black arch rivals from Monessen high with racial slurs, reportedly leading a Brentwood group in calling the Monessen team "monkeys" and cotton pickers.

"CBS Pittsburgh spoke with two Monessen players, who said they were also called "cotton pickers" and taunted with monkey posters when they played at Brentwood the year.Monessen basketball players Justice Rawlins said "I just don't understand racism nowadays because from what I learned in school, it's from the past."From the past, but still lives in the present.Brentwood high released a statement on Wednesday, denying the racial slurs and defending the banana suits because, apparently, there is a rich history of race-baiting attire at Brentwood athletic competitions.

After the game, the District conducted an investigation and spoke to a number of District students and staff who attended the game. Nothing has been revealed to indicate racist comments were made.It seems students dressing in costume for athletic events is not uncommon in high schools and colleges. Two students did dress in banana costumes for the Monessen game.

The District understands that these students have dressed like this for past athletic contests without incident. When these students at Fridays game, though, ran past the section where Monessen fans were seated, causing agitation and disruption,

District officials immediately ejected the students from the game.Brentwood Superintendent Ronald Dufalla also defended the way his district handled the overt show of racism:"There was an incident at Fridays game that was dealt with when it occurred.

I think it was addressed quickly and handled well," Dufalla said. If by "handled quckly" he means that the three students were allowed to enter the gymnasium with banana suits on, keep them on for the entire first half, and then leave the stands to hurl racial insults at the opponents, then yes, Brentwood staff moved very quickly.

...But so what, who cares -- just an isolated incident, no? Isolated but for this high school girls basketball team in Buffalo, N.Y., who made a tradition of chanting "One-two-three-n*gger" to get themselves psyched up before games....

CONCLUSION: RACISM IS SICK, SICKENING, APPALLING, AND DISGUSTING NO MATTER THE GENERATION IT FINDS ITSELF IN. IT IS EVEN MORE SICK IF ANYONE JUSTIFIES THIS SCHOOL OR ANY INSTITUTION IN THIS MATTER AS WELL.
